No, 5 year enlistment period - the standard tour of duty in war zone is 12-18 months. However it is mostly the National Guard that is having to return to the Middle East for multiple tours. Those who are full-time enlistments usually see one deployment then they are re-assigned back here in the United States on base or they are assigned an international military base such as Rammstein depending on where their specialty is needed at that time.

Not only that, there's also a chance he may not even make it out of basic training if a medical issue were to show up. He will have basic training, graduation, then AT, when AT is completed he *might* get to come home for a visit for a weekend before going directly to his assigned duty station. Besides, depending upon his MOS - he may never see the front lines. There are more jobs in the military besides front-line positions. There are cooks, bookkeepers, laundry staff, chaplains, news reporters, supply clerks, etc. A lot of times, these positions never see the frontlines and never leave the base.
It can be a good option for him, but I just don't see it as the only option. That's why I have a problem with it. I'm irritated with TWA right now because he's trying to use statistics against me and tell me that my brother would just continue to be a criminal if he went to jail basically.

There are criminals in the military, too. Killing innocent civilians in Middle East and raping women there. You tell me that military will actually change a troublemaker for better? It depends entirely on the person's mentality.

There has to be another way.

No, but the reaction is appropriate. I'd pick up a gun right now and chase you out of my house.

since he committed crime and he faced a possibility of going to jail... he's much much much more likely to get killed by a thug shanking him than grenade simply because your brother looked at him wrong.

and your brother does not have to be a combatant-type soldier. He can simply choose non-combatant role such as mechanic, logistic, etc.

I'm with TheWriteAlex on it. His future would be much better if he were a veteran than a convicted felon. Of COURSE he doesn't want to be in military but it's for his own good. The statistics is overwhelming enough that a convicted felon is a repeated offender.

so you say you're his oldest sister and you have an intuition to protect him. What kind of person would pick prison over military?

Yes, I KNOW him. He hung out with the wrong crowd in high school and did a few drugs there and there. That was it. It's not like he murdered anyone. He's trying to turn his life around now.

He's still a good person so stay out of it. Don't ****ing judge my brother. Don't call him a criminal because he is not one.

There are criminals in the military, too. Killing innocent civilians in Middle East and raping women there. You tell me that military will actually change a troublemaker for better? It depends entirely on the person's mentality.

There has to be another way.
As with any career or job there will be troublemakers that make the whole look bad. What happened at Abu Ghraib will never happen again as those who were involved were court martialed and punished. They are now serving time in military prisons here in the United States. They will be dishonorably discharged upon their release and will have a felony on their civilian record to show for it.

You are correct it is about the mentality, but the whole point of basic training is to 'get in your face' and see what your made of. They will break him down, but at the same time they will build him back up into a confident, well-directed person. I'm not saying the military is not a cure-all, but for many people it does help when they are running out of options.

The reason why I am saying the military is not a cure-all? My jackass exhusband was ex-military. He still had a record long as my arm after everything came to light. However it was said by his own father that when he was in the army, he was actually doing really good because he was right there where someone was watching him, giving him direct orders, and he was receiving high marks from his commander. His father wished he had stayed in the military, he would have done extremely well. After he got out, that's when everything went down hill. The military can be good for those that need this type of hardcore direction in their life with the comraderie of their unit. Your brother is low on options and to him the military may have seemed like the lesser of two evils. Encourage him on this endeavor, instead of worrying. I understand it's your 'motherly instinct' kicking in, which tells me you will be a very good mother one of these days if you aren't already!

Yeah, we'll see what happens. I just hope he can turn his life around for the better. I'm just afraid that he'll end up with PTSD or whatever that may ruin who he is. That's why I have mixed feelings about it and was hoping that there could be another option besides prison and military. Maybe another chance would be great, but I know he has to accept the responsibility.

I'm just angry with people on here basically judging my brother.

your brother could be like one of those criminals in military that kill random people and dogs?

I don't see how is there any other way except military especially when it comes to prison

where did anybody judge your brother? The basic facts are that he's put himself in a bad position by making poor decisions and is now living with the consequences of his actions. Where did anybody say he is a bad person, or a criminal, etc. etc.?

No, I was just making a point that there are criminals in military, too.

Just leave this alone.

as far as I'm concerned.... your brother did technically commit crime. and how many times is your dad going to continue "cleaning" up his record?

I don't know if you realized it yet or not but your "motherly instinct" is not helping him at all. Think logic for once. If you strongly believe your brother would benefit more from prison than military, then good luck to your brother

I was getting defensive? Of course, he's my blood and flesh. I will not allow anyone call him a criminal or make him out to look like one.

Smoking pot is a crime? Not in my own eyes.

sorry but the world doesn't revolve around you. In real world - it's a crime. You need to wake up and accept the reality.

If he got arrested for smoking pot, then he isn't being responsible enough for himself. All I can say is that one should do it in one's home only and nowhere else.

In California, smoking pot is not enough of a crime to land you in this kind of trouble.

I've been telling you guys to just leave it alone and yet you keep rambling on. Are you trying to break me down? Are you enjoying this ridiculous debate? Few others were gracious, understanding, and supportive unlike you. And I'm well aware that it's still a crime, a ridiculous one that is. Logically, I completely understand that the military is the best option for him right now to change his life around. He already is trying to change his life around so why not just spend few months in the jail and get it over with? It'd be a lot easier if there was just this one... last option that is just out of our grasp and that is one more chance at life.

Okay, do you want me to add to the list? Speeding, unpaid tickets, forgetting to show up in the court. It all adds up and it's completely ridiculous. My brother already regrets the mistakes he made and learned to be responsible.
