Curious - VRS to go International -
I know that most of you, know that I am from Australia but since I have gotten my interest about these VP and VRS technology in the United States of America, I have just watched SVRS website sucess stories videos online and I was impressed on how the company works for the deaf and HOH.
I really wish that in Australia would get these soon, but some topics has been running around in my mind lately, and was curious if it would be possible to expand one of these large VRS companies to expand overseas internationally, which would be interesting with the country's own interpreter service where they can get AUSLAN (Our language) interpreters to be working for VRS, and how this would work. But for us, in Australia the deaf community is very different to what USA have, USA has more than 30 million deaf people all over the United States. In Australia, we have 6 million deaf people out of 21 million all over Australia. I have recently attended the "teleconference" presentation night and I was impressed on how australia has improved the technology for everyone but for the deaf community and its people, I was quite disappointed on their delays - it has been delayed for 4 years about trying to get videophones for the deaf community but since there has barriers where it has impacted us, such as its instructure, networking, and other related stuff that makes the service to work and all. For me, and the other deaf people in australia would love to see this to appear very soon, but government is really -- I can't say it all -- I am not sure what to say it properly but you know what I mean. Internet connections down here is no difference to USA, I know USA has better downloading and uploading and all these good things including costs. Internet connections is the main thing that deaf people with low income (no offense, Aussies but just resources) who can not afford broadband and also, I was not surprised with Telstra in its disability support section which supplies its techonology such as TTY --- they are suckers I have to say, and the law barriers us about the VP's too. (Meaning that VPs should add to the list to go along with so called old fashioned TTY's) I have also found out that, one of the deaf services organisation in australia have these DVC - 1000 Videophones, but wonder why it wouldn't be coming out any time sooner, it would have been great, but come on, we can't wait that long. There must be a lot of resources that can help us to build the technology to a better generation for us, in Australia. We know that our technology in the use of TTY and NRS is very slow and sometimes not their type. For myself, I don't like using the NRS to call hearing people -- VRS would have been a great improvement to our techonology......but when? If you think some resources from other countries would help us improve the techonology and excitement for the deaf community, please do give us the support! if you have any resources that I would be interested and give to organissations who still researches about the techonology and its government. Please do.

From what I noticed on my Sorenson VP200, it doesn't have the correct format to dial out/in calls to international. For example, if I wanted to call 1800 266 000/61292420275 (Telstra, if you are wondering...) it would only show up as 180 026 000/612 924 2027 which would be incomplete. Should Sorenson, Noria/GoAmerica and other VRS Providers, they would need to get the equipment/software modified in order to allow Australians to use VRS services.

Dude! You can contact CSDVRS and ask them for feedbacks for adding VRS in your country.
I dont know if I am allowed to share but they have worked with one country and provided technology for VRS system. So recommend you contact CSDVRS. You can dial help.csdvrs.tv on your webcam if you have one. Download HOVRS.com's signvideo 2.5 (if 3.0 is available download)... its a free down load and works great. Call out to one of us. It will work with ip address. You can call help.csdvrs.tv and ask them about international VRS adding in your country. If you want to experiment HOVRS's 2.5 sign video, you can PM and test call me from your home. |

Sometime, we do call outside from the USA. My wife has to find interpreter who has two skill in ASL and speak Spanish. Still very very hard to find any interpreter knows how to speak Italian and ASL.
My wife is deaf like me. She has 3 languages (Italian, Spanish and English) plus ASL. She is not excellent ASL. Sometime, we call other deaf people in other countries. Big problem with poor quality video due lower speed like dial up internet. No pleasure with poor quality video - not smooth video. Impossible to read fingerspelling. Require to have higher speed internet then better to use VP. |

No, we haven't and I have never though of it, but we need plans to see how this will work down here. The versions of the VPs in USA won't work in Australia, only we can get it off from these DLink companies and the prices are varied from $349 to $400 - can every one afford that? We need funds from the government to make this work.
