Somewhat, I just googled the information. We have it easy today. All information we have in at our fingertips!
as for new clues, introduced in the latter half of the 18th century stabilized by the 1880s greater efficiency, compactness, less complex power transmission system, and reduced susceptibility to damage (especially in battle)

very close but nope. Here is 3 more clues.
used for propulsion for ships (huge or small) very similar to what is used on airplanes. also very similar to what is used at home to move air around.
