What is Shasta County, California hiding ?

A July 8, 2007 Redding, California news article related the death of a 51-year-old woman on a day when temperatures in Redding rose to a deadly 114 degrees. This article also quoted attorney Terry Francke of the Sacramento-based public records advocacy group, Californians Aware, as saying that "there is no rule justifying" Shasta County's refusal to provide the public with information about this woman's death, which includes their concealment of her name, where she lived, and the circumstances surrounding her death. Could this be part of Shasta County's herculean effort to deny the public access to information about the number of homeless people who die on our streets - which is even taken to the point of deliberately falsifying information on their death certificates? At least 25 people died in Shasta County in 2005 as a result of being homeless. However, representatives of both the Shasta County Coroner's Office and the Shasta County Department of Public Health informed me that this information "is no longer available" to the public because Shasta County is now assigning deceased homeless people an address deceptively listed as a "residence" on their death certificates. The public has an absolute right to know how many human beings are allowed to die on the streets of Shasta County for lack of adequate emergency shelter space and housing they can afford, even if that knowledge forces local officials to delay their next multi-million-dollar "beautification"project in the interest of saving lives.

RLF, I don't know, but could it be related to new HIPPA law passed by congress in 2005??? This protects the privacy of a patient/deceased person unless permission given by patient or Power of Attorney to release specific data to third parties. I might be wrong....hmmm. dunno.

Yes, it has one, but can only hold 170 at any one time. Over 3000 homeless counted in 2006, with 300 more homeless children found...

That's bad. only small percent offered that relieved. I wish there was better solution. It's a sad situation and unfortunately it sounds like many of the innocent ones are going to suffer because of that.

Well it's California's fault. Pricy houses cause homeless and foreclourses plus homeless people stuck with heat waves. How patheic California is...

I am not surprised. Welcome to CA. I'm a CA native and have seen all kinds of worse situations. I grew up in Shasta County. It's been years since I have gone to Susanville, Shasta City, and Fall River Mills. I am disappointed to read the link, including the freedom of information Act is not free in Shasta county. There are plenty of homeless people everywhere in Santa Barbara downtown and all over CA. Santa Barbara is not even safe. Several months ago, I went to visit a friend in SB and he had told me there had been a gang fight.. Some 14 year old student from middle school had stabbed other student. Other student had been killed. He also told me he passes a homeless guy regularly on the way to his work. He decided to stop by and asked him some questions. But a homeless guy started hissing back at him and waved his empty soda can as if he was about to throw at him.

CA has all kinds of problems. You name it. We have it. Seriously..

That's really a tough situation, especially for small towns. It is very possible that many of the homeles do not come from those cities. I think they gravitate toward the nearest town they hear has a shelter only to find out the place is full. Do these shelters require that these homeless individuals be from the town? Otherwise, it's a problem for the town, right, especially with their smaller budgets....

They have to raise prices for many reasons. CA is the most populous state in the whole nation. They want to control the population. Southern CA has already face the shortage of water and power right now. We just got another new power plant, but it was never enough. We do blame city developers for building thousands of condos, massive houses and buildings for companies.

In my city, Last year they decided to close the shelters for one reason: Illegal immigrants. They had to do it in order to kick homeless people and Illegal immigrants out of the city because the city hall have had said homeless people and illegal immigrants have been draining money out of the city. They have been contending with gang fights, graffiti, trying to control protests, etc. It is spinning out of control here.
