Extreme temperatures leave California's Homeless Children in danger

Due to record-breaking temperatures that reached in excess of 114 degress, Shasta County officials were ordered by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger to open a cooling center for the nearly three thousand Shasta County residents who were determined to be homeless in a 2006 survey. This figure includes nearly one-thousand children, which was an increase of 45 percent over the previous year, making the most vulnerable and defenseless members of our community the fastest growing segment of that group. Unfortunately, local officials chose to locate this cooling center in a small town 10 miles from Redding, which is the major population center of the county. In addition, the primary agencies serving the homeless in Shasta County refused to either provide homeless families with bus fare to reach this center, or to even publicize the fact that this refuge from the intense heat was available to a clientele which typically doesn't have access to a televison or newspaper. The "cooling center" itself provided no bottled water or other services. However, bottled water was being sold by fairgrounds personnel for a dollar a bottle! More than thirty individuals were taken to hospitals in Redding due to heat-related emergencies. Thank you, Governor Schwarzenegger, for your gestures of compassion, which regretably was wasted in an area where local administrators are anything but compassionate toward the poor in general and the homeless in particular

Welcome to Redding CA Loaves and Fishes Ministry - Additional 300 kids are suffering among the homeless

Sounds to me like it's time to tackle the homeless issue rather than band-aiding the heat issue.

That sounds terrible! Fancy not even providing water or access to this cooling centre.

I don't believe anybody would delibrately want to be homeless. I was homeless for 4 months. Not on the street though. My friend let me stay at her place until I got my own flat.

It's atleast the start of a kind gesture. He could have done nothing at all. although the lack of water and a way there and advertising is kinda a duh thing to have but, at least he tried to do something.

Sadly, Bush and numerous of republicans don't believe about global warming.

Yeah Republicans would never care about the global warming... I was in fight with my republican parents about the global warming, and they told me this very rude: "What's the point of being so green?", "Why should we care about the animals?".

It's VERY sad that republicans only think about the money, I agree with you...

this has nothing to do with global warming.

it happens over time decades, and etc.. its nothing to do with global warming..
its just normal relations with mother nature. we're just experiencing the weather that comes on and off..

you see... there's ice caps melting in mars... is that something to worry? SURE.. but what cause that? there's no pollution in MARS. .. so earth isn't the only planet experiencing this... its just GOD's plan.

i remembered.. that science believe that the earth is getting a few manomillmeters closer to the sun every decades.

and i'm glad the governor is doing something about this.. its a nice gesture.

and i think they really need to do something with the homeless.. they need a real home.. they need help with many things if they're are willing to.

Sure, they would see about what happen in 2050, if alot of animals (cow, chicken, turkey, pig) are passed away due heatwave then meat shortage would be affected and push most Americans to become vegetarian, also meat price would rise about $30 per lbs or more, such as ground beef.

Heatwave is part of global warming, also rise on temperature can be cause by global warming then republicans would be shock and how world is changing.

That's give me a worst nightmare in Nov 2000 when Bush won the election.

Look at last 10 years ago and how is bad? No, it's not...

It's getting more worse and more heatwave are happen in anytime, can be worse like thousands of people are killed in France in last few years ago, Hurricane Katrina is caused by global warming since more hurricanes are popped up from ocean and destroy on everything. Shift in temperature can be affect by global warming too.

how many serious hurricanes happen last year? did you heard one?

tell me about early 1900's the temp reach over 120's??? is that global warming?

tell me why is planet MARS is experiencing global warming? or shall they call it global warming?

some sciencist believe it starts 8,000 years ago.. some sciencist believe it start 180 million years ago during early jurassic period... because it happens on and off (global cooling, global warming)

Yes, the heat wave is causing the global warming. Let me explain how heat wave happens, when the sun's heat go to the earth's atmosphere, the heat wave normally go out of the atmosphere back to the sun, but some are stuck in the atmoshpere cause the heat wave attacking the enviroments. That happened in 1900's, and it is getting worse and worse today.

tell me why is planet MARS is experiencing global warming? or shall they call it global warming?

Because Mars is near to the Sun just like Earth, Venus, and Mercury. Venus is full of volancos, Mercury is full of deserted just like Mars. Earth could be one of them if that continuing happens.

some sciencist believe it starts 8,000 years ago.. some sciencist believe it start 180 million years ago during early jurassic period... because it happens on and off (global cooling, global warming)

I can't debate that because those are just the predicts.
That's the best I can explain..

.....hmm, getting off the original topic of post here. I feel the Northern Sacremento Valley region (Redding, anderson, Red bluff...etc) should have plans for this every year; not just this year. I have lived up there before and it gets pretty hot there....umm really hot there for a few months every year. So many days over 100 there a year! In my books thats pretty hot; so with the population of that area why aren't there plans for this every year????

because they think it will not happen.

i agree that they should plan every year.. make more water bottles, make more A/C, have more A/C repairs. i get tired when the heat waves arrive.. then the water bottles are all out of stock, the A/C are all out of stock, in stores. this is something they need to plan
i'm aware the stores cannot storage that much water in their backroom, but they should storage elsewhere they order from or in DC facitly. once the metrologist figure the heat waves is on the way.. the stores, etc.. all should prepare and order more water, etc.. list goes on.. before they face shortage.

i remember almost every year at my old wal-mart in willmar, mn.. they have this well-known, famous, and popular event every year for more than 20 years. called "sonshine" concert that last 3 days. the store there are always out of water.. and even they knew it is comming.. and i can't believe that wal-mart, target, grocery store didn't plan anything on this.. but the gas station planned on this.. and i can't believe that people are willing to pay $4 for 12 pack of water bottles at gas stations. just because all retail and grocery stores ran out of stock on water bottles.

The Global Warning. Here are some list:

Air Conditioners (free-on) (both homes and factories)
Smoking chimney factories at nights
Refrigerators (free-on for old refrigerators, and they still use it.)
too many vehicles exhausts
shocking news some big Rice farms in Asia created ozone
commercial airplanes
air can scent sprayers (households)
hair can sprayers
paint can sprayers
gas lawn motors (home owner and commercial business)
dump lands with filled up with underground natural gas - see pipe vents on the ground
radio antenna towers (yes, it's evidence cuz of energy heats in the air. Many people use their cell phones.)

We (people) are causing the pollution.

Global warning and the ozone holes are two different problems, but they are caused by pollutants.

(1) ozone - man-made chemicals like chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) that makes ozone thinner which create ultraviolet raditation to reach the Earth's surface.

(2) Global warning - buildup of CO2 (carbon dioxide - gas). Sea levels will rise and threatening coastal cities. In Glacier, a piece of Larsen B ice broke off in 35 days, and the chunk size is Rhode Island.

I read that 27,000 people died from heat wave in Europe especially poor and elder people. The quiz is here - Environmental Defense - What Do You Know About Global Warming?

Good post, Webexplorer, I agree with you, it was us who cause the pollution, and it makes the earth having the problem.

Okay....let's get rid of A/C and we all will dying of dehydration, heat stroke or something.

Commerical Airplane? Oh, come on, I wanna go to Europe. Okay, what about a ship? I'm sure they cause the global warming, too.

Grass lawn motors? Oh, come on, I gotta keep my lawn beautiful. Let the grass grow and the bugs or animals will eat me alive. lol

Radio antenna towers and cell phone? How we suppose to contact the people? What if they are in trouble?

Refrigerators? Hmm...I like to drink cold water and soda. or eat my turkey sandwich..

so going on......You gonna send us back to Caveman age? *grunts*

I can understand that. I wish that all companies should know better than that. A few of them are working on a new design of A/C, and they are very slow process. I cannot live without A/C.

We could use a cordless gas lawn motor instead of gas. We are thinking about it. Or, I could buy and use a modern reel lawn motor, not the heavy old one.

I don't have the answers for radio antenna towers and cell phones, but I think that we should limit some radio towers.

Buying newer refrigerators that do not have free-on.

If we go back to Caveman age, we will end up uncivilization. We shouldn't let that happen in the future. I think George Bush would like that to go back to his own caveman what he had done so much damage in our country especially embarrassed of many who voted for him.

The government gave hundreds of truck campers for black people in LA who lost their home. Most people already moved back their new home. Guess what to the campers. They burglarized and stole many parts inside the campers such as lights, chairs, microwaves, TV sets, bathtubs, windows, wires, cables, mattresses, and some small parts. Now, the FEMA and Government decided not provide them again if there is another hurricane in the future. They leave them their own problems because we paid taxes to help them, and they did stupid thing. Most damaged campers are sold on eBay for less money.

AC is required to be modifed to make ozone friendly and wouldn't produce more Co2 to make global warming looks worse and worse in every years. In near future, next-gen of AC wouldn't use much electricity.

Important stuff to human's life is fine, other unnesecery like drive the car for cruise and enjoy to waste the gas or oil from car, throw all recycable stuff in regular trash can, use bad AC with low or high temperature and others aren't good reason to use then would affect global warming.

Refrigerator is fine to use because it's important to keep food and drink so cold.

If you use light in house on during daytime or use much watts then would affect global warming too.

You means Louisiana? It supposed not confuse with Los Angeles.

dump lands with filled up with underground natural gas - see pipe vents on the ground
radio antenna towers (yes, it's evidence cuz of energy heats in the air. Many people use their cell phones.)
Also factory farming. That is also causing global warming because of the methane.
