How many disabled (in a wheelchair) members on AllDeaf?
I was just wondering about that. Also, do you look at the word "disabled" in a negative way like we deafies do? What about the word "lessabled"?
A friend of mine is in a wheelchair but it broke and doesn't want to work. It's supposed to be a "powered" wheelchair. It's kind of old and he needs a replacement. Know of a good and reputable site where he can order a new one?

Hi Alex, I am not a wheelchair member but I know people who come up to me in their brand new mechanized wheelchair. Scooter, Electric wheelchairs, power chairs, mobility scooters and electric scooters from the Scooter Store Powerwcrulez may know a better wheelchair company. I am not sure what is the top of the line in mechanized wheelchairs.

There are those scooters they sell on television. Your friend might be eligible for a free scooter.

I can walk with my own 2 feet...but my daughter gets to ride on a power wheelchair at a young age (3 years old) . I dont know what kind it is until I get to see it in person when I get my daughter from the ex wife. I've seen pics and whoooa damn it is purple all over with her name sewn on the seat cushion.
Im no expert in wheelchairs, but being expert in Fords is another story... |

I have tried to get a power chair or scooter but medicaid refused to pay for it...I need one because I cannot walk very far, and I end up having to rent a crappy manual chair at places like Six Flags or Sea world where there is a LOT of walking around, all day long, I can't walk that much due to hip dysplasia, and manual chairs are very difficult for me to get around in on my own, my fiance has to push me around, and sometimes the terrain makes it difficult for him to push me around. Even just walking around the mall or walmart has began to get painful for me as of late. :/ I prefer to walk but I cannot walk for long. I had a manual chair before but don't have it anymore, and it wasn't real good anyway.

It's a pity that Medicaid won't pay for what you need. Isn't it possible they'd cover for joint replacement operation? Perhaps you could get a wheelchair or a scooter if they'll agree to an installment plan? |

Yes, I think medicaid would cover the hip replacements, but I'm not sure I want to go through that. The recovery is going to be pretty rough and possibly long, I have already gone through that kind of thing twice as a very small child (2 surgeries). It was very rough on me. The CI surgery was a walk in the park compared to this.

Hi Alex,
Good question! What you will find is that some ride their chairs with pride and some ride their chairs in shame. Some like to talk about it and some prefer to ignore the chair part of them. Some are in their chairs by accident and some got there due to health reasons. Some are even in chairs because they want to be. So the answers to your questions are very complex and depend a great deal on their circumstances, their attitudes, their family and friends, etc. Here is a quadraplegic (a.k.a. "quad") that didn't let a "little" accident slow him down: ![]() He rides his powerchair into his van, locks it down where the driver's seat used to be and then "drives by wire" to wherever he wants to go. Quote:
![]() Or how about shooting a gun? ![]() Of course, this guy is having a LOT of fun! ![]() I could go on and on and show some videos of other "wheelers" doing stunts with a manual chair in a skateboard park or jumping off ramps in a powerchair at 8 miles per hour. It's all how you want to spend the rest of your life! I've heard "Different Abilities" and many others. The truth is, for some of us wheelers, we are MORE abled than some "walkies" that I know. WheelchairJunkie.com If you or anyone has questions, feel free to ask here, in a PM or even over on WCJ. Just like AD with hearies and Deafies, WCJ has walkies and Wheelies. LOLGiven more information about your friend's situation, location, disability, chair model, etc.; I could probably give them some good referals, more information and tips. That is also available en-mass over at Wheelchair Junkie. Thanks for bringing up this topic, Alex, and allowing me to share some tidbits of information. Dave |

LOL, I haven't quite performed any amazing feats that warrant a YouTube production (yet). If my wife has anything to say about it, I may never be able to "ride at the edge" just for fun. She loves me too much and wants me to stick around to be with her and the six (6) grandkids we've been awarded with from God for not killing our own three (3) kids.
As for my do it sitting abilities, I will mention that while the wife is away I will play! Stay tuned because it is only a matter of time for the day to arrive for me to do something really exciting to get that adrenaline rush and have it captured on film (or digital bits as the case may be). Dave P.S. For now, how about a posed shot of me and my real-to-life avatar?
