Brand Name ? Air Conditioner/Heater same unit for condos/apartments

We're have some arguments about
choose the best Brand name of
Air Conditioner/Heater unit special
smaller size for condos/apartments

Remember it is BOTH A/C and Heater
TOGETHER in one Unit so it is very
very very difficult to find another one to
replace it almost same quality and size.

I currently have Carrier with
Model# 50QP-018-301
BUT, Carrier is NO longer making
the same kind anymore for condos/apartments.

I wonder which brand name do you
know that is BEST ? Which is 2nd best ?

Armstrong ? or Rheem ??

Who cares.. Just BRAND name..

As long you feel comfy with air condition brand name and good price reasoable then buy it..
Why do you cares about brand name...

Rest of machines are tend broken within 2 to 5 yrs later.. depneds machine

specific brand name of air condition... Just name of manfuraturing company!

Sorry, but sounded like your talking about heat pump. These heat pumps got bad raps lately. They aren't that cheap to operate, especially up in the north. my best friend's possible ex gf got heat pump with 100% electric furnace, and one month alone on electric bill was 1,900 dollars in NOVEMBER!!! I have seen that bill myself. She thought it was typo, I read it carefully, and verified the wattage of these devices... and nope it is not typo!
Your right about Carrier, they shut down the production plant in Syracuse, NY few years ago.

might have some draft holes somewhere.

You are right it is the heat pump, but it has both
combination of heat pump with A/C together
thats why it's very hard to find another
replacement because it's very unique.

I was surprised about my neighbor chose
Armstrong instead of Rheem they seem to
be happy with Armstrong... Its very difficult
to figure out the quality whether Rheem is
better than Armstrong or vice versa etc.

It got nothing to do with draft. It is the location where it is located. It is pretty much on top of the mountain where you can see the lakes down. Plus they get damn cold easily. THe house itself I think about 2,500 sq ft. Really huge fancy house.

I don't know what's best for your situation. I can only tell my experience.

Our first heat pump (Trane) lasted about 14 years. We've had our new one (Heil) for about two years.

Roughly, we average about $70 per month for just AC or heat. This year the basic rate increased, so our total electric bill monthly average is about $139 (that includes AC, heat, water heater, washer/dryer, stove, etc.). Our house is over 2,100 sq. ft.

Heat pumps are best for the South; not good for cold climates.

Hubby suggests that any well-known name brand should be fine.

Get a unit that is strong enough for your place but not TOO strong. It's actually inefficient to buy a unit TOO big for your needs, and can cause moisture problems.

Maybe you can find out what your neighbors use, and if they are satisfied.

Me too, I like Air Central types Its difficult for me

Yes my neighbors use Armstrong they are very satisfied
I was hoping to purchase either Trane or Rheem I was
told from the Home Depot mechanic guy said if there
is a same price with Trane or Rheem, then he would
choose Trane rather than Rheem. He mentioned that
he refuse to recommend Armstrong/Magic Chef.

Oh well...

That is correct, heat pump quits working when temperature drops below 30 degrees, and would have to kick alternative heating energy, my friend got 100% electric furnace! That is real bad!!!! He didn't have choice because there is no natural gas pipeline, and it isn't easy to get oil refill due to winter condition.

Trane makes a more sturdy outdoor unit but they both work the same. Heil costs less.

It's important to shop around for the best deal. Try to get it during the "off" season, when they might have sales.

The retail installers charge at least 100% markup for the installation service. We bought our unit wholesale, for $1,100 (12 seer rating; you don't need one that big). If we had bought it from a retail installer, it would have cost about $3,500. We paid our AC guy $250 to install it. But I know that not everyone can do it that way.

IF heat pump is best for the South and
quit working below 30 degrees, then
what is the best alternative for
below 30 degrees ?

(I know the woodstove is the champion
best one of all, but it could NOT fit into
condo/apartment... I recalled during
a real bad snowstorm and freeze weather
where I stayed at my brothers house with
that woodstove it was way TOO HOT
I fell asleep on the sofa without
any blanket at all because of this
wonderful woodstove being TOO HOT !!)
