Junk Mail

I understand that some companies sell our addresses as well as e-mail addresses to other companies. I understand that it is our responsibility to report them to stop doing that, but what gives them the right to do something like that? I feel it is a violation of one's privacy. It makes me irritated that something like this is allowed, but they make up a bunch of stupid rules to keep this happening. What ammendments or law makes this kind of activity legal?

Many of these companies are not responsible. It makes me irritated that they do things to cheat you and difficult for you to keep them from selling your privacy without your knowledge or making them in small prints or not saying anything at all that they participate in such activities.

The companies don't realize that it takes an extreme amount of energy trying to call these companies to get you off these lists. What people some people may not find out is that you can tell them to get you off their list, but they can still sell your privacy information. There was one company online who asked for e-mail to confirm removing you from their list, then they stated afterwards that you need to e-mail them to get your e-mail off their list. Of course, in small prints. Of course, I put an old e-mail of mine knowing their tricks. Some companies ask you for your e-mails and addresses first, then ask you in boxes if you want them to contact you. I did this once and checked "NO" but they still violate that. It's such a pain in the butt. It's never worth giving out e-mails, cell phones, addresses to anything that they have no business knowing. A lot of stores ask you for your zip codes, and I have stopped giving that. They just ask you without telling you why. I don't want their garbage, and I don't have time to read every garbage nor take all my time removing me off their lists.

Doctor's offices ask you what your occupation is. I leave that empty because they have no business knowing that. They never ask me to provide such things.

Your occupation can have an important impact on your health. That's the reason doctors ask about it.

For example, people who work with chemicals, or use repetative motions, or sit at a computer all day, or lift heavy objects, or exposed to animals--all those things can impact health.

One sure-fire way to avoid junk mail is not to play these "Sweepstake" games. For example, you often see these little box with notepad like forms that you fill in your name and addresses sometimes phone number and e mail address, in hope that you will win free membership, or free minivan, etc... That is how companies collects the mailing list and try to market you back. Trust me, they are gimmicks to get you on their mailing list and sells to other companies the lists. I don't do these things and I hardly get junk mail!

That is very true.

I used to work in a factory, and I had to do a lot of repetative lifting, bending, twisting, running, reaching, things like that...and it really affected my heath...I have a very bad back now and can no longer stand for long, cannot do any of those things anymore...I can no longer work at any jobs where standing and running and a lot of walking is required, I have to sit down most of the time.

Sit at a computer all day -- carpal tunnel and other things.

Lift heavy objects - can cause back injuries.

Exposure to animals - allergies, germs, etc.

Exposure to chemicals at a factory - can cause you to get sick or cause your children to be born with birth defects if you work at such jobs while you are pregnant, etc.

Also Ordering Magazines Especially Reader Digest's. The Junk Mail Just Double. I Eliminated Alot Of Those Things By Buying Them In Store. It Took A Few Years To Get Off Those Mailer List Simply By Not Ordering Via Mail.

Thanks for your tips. It's tempting to fill out those sweepstakes. I knew they did that, but so tempting. I will try to think twice before filling out one. My mom's the one who gets the most crap. I filled out something to help us stop getting crap. I forgot where, but it's the no phone call registry that's supposed to help reduce in I forgot how long... I didn't know the crap phone registry lasted one year. WTF is wrong with the government making rules so difficult to mandate?! I bet only less than 1% likes junk mail. Why have the problem? PLUS, I have to recycle them, but who wants to keep recycling things that we don't wanna see?

I just don't get why it is so possible to trick people by making it extra difficult for them to know that they are going into junk mailing lists. I have heard of news about stoping junk crap, but nothing seems to be done about it. Why is it so hard?

Oh, and I remember when I filled out the No call registry, and I remember there was no telemarketing during that year. We get a few sometimes. I wish my mom would get a Caller ID because sometimes she hates not to know who is calling.

I received junk mails from credit card companies. I wrote down on the papers that say "Stop sending me" or "No Thank You" with big letters. I dropped them off in the mailbox. In fact, the companies are forced to pay the stamp with their own money. I think I am getting less junk mails so far.

I tried one time to send back something like this ( I think) but the post office sent it back home twice. Do some post office not want to send it back? I will try again this tip and see what happens. Thanks!

I always dream of an America without Junk Mail. How Utopia that would be....

Well, I don't like to be that harsh even thought I know they are annoying with their mails. I'd rather just put NO Thank you, but if they do keep sending crap, I think it's fine to do that.

Often, doctors ask you about your occupation so that they can better keep track of those with diseases or sicknesses... and help future generations with their health.

For instance, you could come in with bad coughs. Your occupation? It's probably a coal miner. You write that down on your form. After your doctor talks to you, he will probably say something like... "You're a coal miner. That is possibly a reason. Doctors report that 85% of all coal miners that come in suffer from serious coughs." Now, you understand the risk behind working as a coal miner.

Doctors don't use your occupation to take advantage of you.

Ah, that explains it. College students are the number ONE target for credit card junk mail. Some colleges sell their student mailing lists to junk mail companies.

But... it would easy for us including you to reply "No Thank You" in order to hurt the companies because they have to pay for the stamps for nothing. Someday, the companies might give up mailing to customers. I rather to save our trees for something else like building good houses than someday purchasing woods from China unexpectedly.

Beside, you might have noticed that most furniture in several stores are made by compressed fake woods. I just hate the fake woods. Most living room couches are installed with cardboards and fake woods. What a really werid because the cardboards "absorb" molds in a few years. Sorry, this is a sort of off subject.

That goes for beds too...nasty...glad I bought a new bed a couple of months ago...and got rid of my couch as well.
