In the past, I would barter for gift cards. I never ran into any problems with them. I did read a story about someone who got taken. That person had bartered for a gift card. The person who traded away the gift card reported it lost and got a new one. Therefore, the person had the gift card along with good they received in the deal. Call that stealing if you want to.

I've not ran into any issues as mentioned above, but this made me think. If I barter in the future, I may have the person sign a statement that they agreed to trade the gift card and that they could potentially be sued if they pulled out something like this.

The problem with this scenario is that 99.99% of the folks you ask to sign this agreement would/might be turned off.....no? I think you might want to think of the good will of all that is you throughout your business practices vs the chances of actually being a victim.......

I would not accept any gift card b/c there is no way of knowing if they're good anymore. The card could have been used and have no value to it.

There is usually a phone number or website where you can punch in the card # and find out what the balance is on the card.

Better idea! Screw drawing up a settlement, enforcing it court only means more court expenses possibly exceeding the card's value. Have him wait, confirm the card.
