My roommate has been wanting to get a chest freezer. I think this is a stupid idea especially if there are only 2 people living in house. It'll skyrocket our electric bill.

What is your experience with chest freezer(s)? Is it worth the hassle getting one?

Depends; do you need a lot of storage space to freeze items? If it's not a big need, you can try to make room in your current freezer by eating them up or throwing stuff away.

If you need a lot of storage space, you can make sure to get an Energy Star-compliant chest freezer. There might even be low energy freezers nowadays. If you can get a lot of food cheap, it could be a good way to save money long-term by allowing you to freeze them.

we have a large high effeciency deep freezer (chest) with nothing in it and still our bill is the same, once its cold it barely runs unless you open it every 5 minutes.
They are made to stock/store meats/food for winters or summer BBQs but not designed for daily use. Stock it, then take out a weeks supply at once and put in the regular fridge/freezer to use.

What is your roommate's justification for the chest freezer?

What size did you have in mind? Maybe a 5 cu.ft. small one wouldn't be too bad, if you have the space.

I've never owned a chest freezer, and we've managed fine. My MIL has one in her basement, with food in it from the 1980's. (Yeah, I know; she won't let us get rid of it.)

If you both like to stock up on meat when it on sale or eat a lot frozen food it would be good thing to have. My dad had a freezer in our basement but it was like a fridge, we had 6 people in my family and dad kept the freezer stocked with meat and ice cream. Do you lose your power a lot for a long time where you live ? I have heard of people having to throw food away when this happen .

Here's another thought:

Your roommate doesn't have any weird habits that would involve freezing evidence or serial acquaintances?

:hmm:

I've had several....all energy savers. During the Shrimp season...I kept it full! Always have Shrimp to eat...plus the "Buy 1/Get 1" for Meats....So yes, think it's a good idea....Saves gas and time also.

Shrimp!

We always had one when our kids were at home . We bought huge boxes of frozen hamburgers, bags of vegetables, frozen entrees, etc.

We don't have much use for it now with just my husband and me.

I think it really depends on the size of the nuclear family.

It would great for people that fed their pet a raw food diet , they could made up meals and freeze them.

Yes, I think the size of the household (especially if teen boys are included) is a determining factor.

Chest freezers are also popular with people who do their own hunting, fishing, and farming.

Like you, it's just me and Hubby at home now.

I have an upright freezer for years. Just as Mike has stated, as long as you don't open it every 5 minutes, and just pull out what you need for the week. You'll be good.

The chest is actually better, because cold drops. So it will stay in the 'chest' and you won't loose much temp. As long as you don't leave the door open too long.

There are all kind of size, check them out at stores. Since you only got 2 people in your place. you might be able to get away with a 3 square foot one.

If you are still using yours, maybe you can fill it half full of newspapers and then the food on top of that to make it near-full....makes for a more efficient appliance, methinks....

Interesting. I hadn't heard of that, but it does make sense.
