I am HOH I am NOT Deaf, however I'd like someone to explain to me what the difference is since some people appear to think that I don't know. Also, there are a SOME Deaf people, NOTICE HOW I SAID SOME!! that don't like HoH people. If it doesn't bother anybody, please give me some of the reasons why...are we too arrogant, maybe we conform to hearing culture too much...whatever...?

All I know is I've got a lotta people who think I'm just some HoH loser whose taking Deaf Culture/ASL classes.

Please try to respond in a patient manner so that were all just getting information and not feeling attacked.

Imagine what it was like if a group of hearing and HOH cats took an ASL class taught by a deaf cat. A HOH ferret signs up for the ASL class. A lot of hearing and HOH cats may make fun of the HOH ferret. Maybe even run the HOH ferrets out of classs. Once that happens, news will travel fast to the ferret colony. Then the ferret colony will make up their own ASL class and exclude any cats who wants to learn ASL.

im sorry but im a tad slow and not good with analogies lol. whats the difference between a Hoh ferret and Hoh cat again what are you trying to say lol

dereks like cats and turos analogies, that's him lol, and i have no idea what 'other thread aquablue is refering to, she should indicate which, im not gonna spend hours looking for it, i have short attention span .

yeah it not nice that Deaf do this, it is a Deafism, a form of 'reverse audism' to make themselve feel superior.
you should try pick up a book for a library (it expensive), Deafhood by Paddy Ladd, he got great ideas and some researched bits and pieces but book isnt well structured which is annoying.
its more like a rough compliation of ideas of Deaf people right across the audiological and social experiences to amalgamate, and to begin realise it was Hearing people's institutions that divided d/Deah/hI/Hoh/CI people apart, by 'stoking fires of 'internal politics' (my words there)....

i feel ya, some Deafs are fucking mean, and that's not right.

Now Ive heard it from someone else other than myself. And I don't understand why they would treat another who is HOH/profound deaf any different that they want to be treated. The ones at the deaf social I went to were downright ignorant !

yip , it seems sometime I wonder how often is 'Deaf culture' is mistaken for a culture, when it is not, but a cult. That is anti-social elitism/exclusion is not what Deaf culture is about! but a cult of jealous groups, playing the pecking order of 'mindless coolness', basically they're airheads who prefer to drag everyone down.
THEY are the one who should be the ones kicked out of Deaf clubs...and start learning the real rules of social and it doesnt have to be hearing rules, absolutely not, its more about maturity which they haven't even began to grasp one bit of it, "Deaf culture" shouldn't be used as an excuse for this.

Deaf = cannot hear anything at all even with hearing aids
HoH = can hear some with the help of hearing aids but still cannot talk on the phone and have to read lips

I don't think it's as clean cut as that.

I am confused I have moderate to severe hearing loss, I am mod -severe to profound in my left ear an mod-severe in my right, and I still talk on the phone...

Try asking HOH ferrets the difference between deaf, HOH, and hearing ferrets. Do the same with cats. Maybe they'll laugh at you and think all this is funny. What is the point? We human overanalyze too much. Deaf, HOH, and hearing ferrets just want to run around and hide stuffs. They'll say "Ha, got ya!!! Let's them chase me. Play, play, play!!!" All those strange humans sit and ask strange questions. Deaf, HOH, and hearing cats are kings and queens. They want their catnips or else they'll be sad. What was the terminology, again?

Thank you I've been told that I've presented myself in my posts in the wrong the light. I've only been a member for a couple of days, and I've already been called a deaf wannabe, a hypocrite, and a kiss-up to deaf people in effort to find friends, has not been a welcoming first couple of days for someone who is hard of hearing looking for information and looking share experiences.

I am Deaf.

I can hear something with hearing aid but i know i cant hear the high pitch like "s". I can hear peoples voice. Foot steps water running dishwasher and go on. Of course with hearing aid.

I am still Deaf because i am involved with the Deaf community. I am an ASL user. I still hang out with hearing people like close co workers or my kids or my family or relatives.

Im still Deaf.

Thank you just been trying to find information and people I can relate to on here, I may have gone about it the wrong way. I just want to learn and to also share experiences. And I've been called a hypocrite, deaf wannabe and a kiss up. Not an easy couple of days.

..and you still have a chance to learn to be Deaf, its an identity thing, like race and enthicity. its a political paradigm in which d/Deaf people should stop doing the pathetic in-fighting and start lobbying with a real political goal, to gain Deaf rights. Like for example, to stop hearing peolpe fucking us over, abusing us, controlling us, stop workplace bullying, this doesnt have to be violence, just stupid bosess, like contract cutting, not providing communication support should be made into more powerful, like ADA, but better and stronger. I want to see Deaf become lawyers to protect Deaf Rights, that sort of thing.

Apart from political wishes breifly outlined here, I am also saying you have a chance to be Deaf you do have a change to wind-down relax and 'talk' with hoh people about things, and simmilar experiences and feel not out of place, thats the sort of thing I'd like to see, TOLERANCE, and Freindship, which is what Deaf was supposed to be all about in the first place. OK some might struggle with ASL, BSL, but tolerance that some are going to not be able to learn it as quickly because of prolonged exposure to the hearing world and the 'self-pushing' to hear as much as they can, lip read as much, tiring but often rewarding yes, but there is also a place to chill out and not do so much try-hard but interact with like-experienced hoh.deaf/hearin impaired without fear of 'hearier than thou or deafer than thou'

so , dont cut yourself off from possibilities but sadly internal horizontal violence (deaf picking on deaf/ Deaf picking on deaf/deaf picking on Deaf, etc) has slowed it right down to almost as a halt to grind. its real sad, and i'd wish Paddy ladd would do more work, but pissing about in Deaf clubs too much

I'm the same as Frisky.

I wear HAs, but they only help me hear noises. I can't make out speech, and certainly cannot hear the phone, even though I can speak.

I am active at our local Deaf club - we play games (board games, poker, etc. -- that type of games) etc.

I have always considered myself Deaf even though I can hear noises with HAs.
