Ok, Im up for my drivers license renewal and well, heres my story...

When I originally got my first drivers license it was for Motorcycle only, after taking and passing everything they had a restriction for both outside rearview mirrors because of my hearing... but when they punched it all into the computer they missed the restriction, so I never had it on my license even after I got a standard license for the car years later....
Now, I cant hear, without my aids especially now... so, would it be best to just have my license marked however they do for someone who is basically deaf since I cannot hear? I know I am not going to hear a word they say for instructions at the DMV when I go so they are going to ask and/or put restrictions on it so, whats the best way to go?
Besides I am disabled with disabled plates, and this will be the first license renewal since then.

I don't see why not, I would if I were in the same position. You see too many stories about people getting into trouble for not listening to the police, I would think it would be better for you because you CAN'T hear if police give you instruction.

I agree, as for the last incident at WalMart when it got robbed and I was driving a similar van, had the gun in my face and all, luckily a witness came and told the cop I wasn't the one. I guess it would be better if it was in the system so they do know I cant hear.

I think it would be better. I guess it's because on our cycling forum they were talking about an elderly guy riding a bike who the cops were trying to stop. Despite the fact that they shouted several times for him to stop and get off of the bike, he continued on. So they tased him. He fell off of the bike, hit his head on the ground and died.

The guy was deaf.

And the reason they were trying to stop him was for something very minor.

Ive heard of a similar story here, same outcome, Tazed, hit head and died... but was a younger male.

It would be very difficult, I can understand your position. Just think about this, what if hearing criminal decides to steal your car, and having cops show up thought the driver was Deaf, then Cops safety will be compromised. I really don't see perfect solution since anyone can borrow, steal anyone's vehicle.

Best for Deafies is just cooperate and do whatever damn slowly. Don't over reach anything until you are able to inform cops you can't hear. Usually they will cooperate back. Its best for Deaf to have their hands up and be visible to cops. There are unfortunately incidents where cops mistakenly killed Deaf innocents.

Yup, heard that case too. :(

I was in a hurry to work one morning, got stopped by a trooper... well With the bright lights on me I couldn't see anything behind me, I was trying to look in the mirror for him to approach but instead he went to the passenger side door, caught me off guard and I was blinded by the lights so I couldn't find my switch for the window or the door lock and he is rapping on the window with his flashlight to roll it down or open the door... he was kind of an ass about it too. I mean its 430 am, dark, Im tired and blind from the light...come on now, don't be a dick...cops.

I have the visor card, that I need to find the link for, that also included a wallet size card. I have 2 of the wallet size cards and have them taped one to my front windshield (where the inspection sticker would be) and one to the back windshield. If I get pulled, first thing I do is lower my visor and hold up the larger copy. If they come to the passenger side, I can turn in that direction.

Visor Cards—Bridging the Communications Gap When Stopped by the Police

Thank you

Thank you KristinaB. That was a helpful.
I had an incident a few years ago out there in the dark of night without the good hearing aids I have now. It was a rolling right turn at a stop sign where no one in the world should have cared at all. I was the only one out there besides the hidden rookie cop. It ended up with me blinded by lights from both sides as they brought in reinforcements.

Me out there with my hands in the air hollering I can't hear! Them hollering at me I still do not know what. When the cop finally came up to me to get my drivers license I saw he was a scared kid.

I stood out there for a long time waiting with the lights on me. I did not see any cars come by- it was a side road late at night dark as the inside of a cow. Finally I got my card back. The kid told me I could go on my way. My frame of mind was not so happy after that.

Yestersday, when I was driving, I suddenly saw flashing light right behind me!!! What did I do? I thought it was police after me. I realized it was ambulance that was trying to pass me. All I would have to say is be aware of your surroundings at all the times.

I wouldnt worry about getting the info put on your lincense. Its not mandatory - but some clerks (not all) at DMV may think it is. if they put a mirror restriction on your lincense and you just happened to have one of those silly car without full view mirror, then you can be written up for an extra ticket for nothing.

Your best bet is to have one of those visor cards to show the officers - I have them. Thats all they need to know.

Wouldn't a solution to all this grief and accidental killings to deaf people would be to have some kind of plate on your vehicle that identifies you as such? Like a standard plate for each state?

I don't have any restrictions, I can't remember anywhere on the any of the forms I have filled out whether it had questions about being deaf of HOH. I've had to deal with plenty of DMV clerks that were made very aware of my hearing issues just by trying to talk to me and they've never said anything either

There are no such killings to deaf people just because they are deaf. I am calling your bluff.

Even if it were accepted for vehicles, it still wouldn't protect deaf pedestrians that police approach.

I agree. Also I wouldn't want a plate that made me a target for criminals or idiots either.
