Happy Memorial Day

Hello people,

What are you doing on Memorial Day?

For me, I'm not about that and I will spend some time with my family.

I appreciate your sentiment but people don't say "Happy" Memorial Day. It's not a happy day.

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance to honor our war dead. It's not a day to celebrate.

Traditionally, the American Flag is lowered to half staff/mast from 8 a.m. until noon. Then, it's raised up again. Also, people decorate the graves of military veterans with small American flags, wreaths, or flowers.

I'm apologized for incorrect title and I couldn't edit my post to change the title because it won't effective after I change it. I have to get moderator to change the title.

I used Google to find whichever is best to say.

Well, some of the people who has family members never gone to war. But they do celebrate by having a picnic or going to see the fireworks in the evening. They want to relax on this holiday. Beside, I am sick of wars. Can we have peace in our world (Earth)? I am sorry about our fallen soldiers who had to suffered from the battles over the years and died. Just have to bury our thoughts and enjoy the moments in this special holiday. We don't need to be sad all day, eh? Remember I was from USA before coming to Canada.

Also can we say "Can they be happy without fighting over there?". Wars were terrible and I don't like that at all.

The weather here is so bad....and we attempted to bring in our flag last night, but failed...the wind was so strong on the river, along with the pelting rain....I felt so bad about it.....It's still pouring buckets of water and by the look of the sky, more is to come. We're gonna bury our Flag and buy a new one.

That used to be called Armistice Day, and was established after World War I. In America, it's now called Veterans Day.

Memorial Day is for honoring the war dead.

Veterans Day is for honoring all military people, past and present, alive and dead.

Please don't bury your Flag! That's not the respectful way of disposing of it.

Please turn it in to a Boy Scout or VFW or similar group that does respectful disposal ceremonies for American flags.

We turn our old Flags in to the local VFW where they have regularly scheduled ceremonies for the Flags.

"(k) The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

Thanks...someone did suggest we just burn it and I said "no way"....the VFW club is very close to where I live, so I'll take it down there this week.

We're getting the edge of Beryl. Some wind and rain today. TCS was able to put the neighborhood Flag at half mast at 8 a.m., and back up at noon between rain showers.

We were already planning an indoor activity for this afternoon, so the rain shouldn't interfere too much. We going to see the movie Battleship. We like that the story promotes old veterans (like TCS and me) and Wounded Warriors (one of the organizations that we support). Also, it shows an amputee as a hero, which my SIL (a below-the-knee amputee), his family, and we like.

Yes, Memorial Day is a day of remembrance. But it does not mean everyone has to be sad. I do not see anything wrong with saying "Happy Memorial Day" since we want to celebrate life and honor the ones thy have passes on fighting for our freedom.

It's okay foxrac! I think we can still enjoy the day and I also think we can celebrate even in death. We can be thankful for those that gave their lives so that we could celebrate in freedom. It's just that we need to honor our nation's war dead too. They paid the ultimate price and gave their lives so others like us could be free. Have a great day buddy!

Your welcome.

My father served in Marines for 20 years, from 1972 to 1993 and last his base was in Quantico, VA, it is around less than 30 miles to DC. I visited this area so numerous time from 1991-1993 so did stayed with my father for while. In 2011, I visited Quantico again with my father for first time since last time was 1993. It was huge change for sure and I-95 got more wider and expanded other highway in middle so Woodbridge has a lot of sprawling and still very crowded on Sunday. It was day before I went to Gallaudet University and got struck in traffic for 2 hours in just less than 30 miles to DC on Monday morning.
