Geelong to host Australian Deaf Games in 2012

Geelong to host Australian Deaf Games in 2012 - Local News - Geelong, VIC, Australia (http://www.geelongadvertiser.com.au/article/2009/11/12/120911_news.html)

*GEELONG is fast gaining a name for itself as host of elite sporting competitions, securing yet another national sporting event. *

The city will host the 16th Australian Deaf Games in early 2012, after making a successful bid for the multi-sport event, which is likely to attract 1000 participants and up to 1600 support staff.

Geelong out-bid Wodonga to secure the event following a tour by organisers of the city's sports and social facilities.

"It's all about being able to hold the event successfully and Geelong has proved it can do that with the other events it has hosted," City of Greater Geelong councillor Bruce Harwood said.

"Our wide range of high quality sports facilities including the Arena, Kardinia Pool, Landy Field and Geelong Baseball Centre played a big part in securing this national event. And we're not a capital city so it means it doesn't cost as much for event organisers.

"And we have huge acceptance from the community which is always key to a successful event."Held every four years, the Games involve up to 20 different sports and attract competitors from all over Australia and New Zealand.

Geelong's Renee Kahle, a member of the Australian Women's Deaf Basketball team, said she was thrilled the event was coming to her home town.

"This is my first time to participate in this event and I'm so excited it's so close to home," she said.

"Geelong is an awesome place to host Australian Deaf Games, with great facilities and a supportive community. I'm sure lots of people will be keen to get involved."

The Australian Deaf Games is one of the oldest sporting events in the country.

The origins of interstate deaf sport competitions can be traced back to 1895 when the Victorian Deaf Cricket team travelled to South Australia for a friendly cricket match.

The first Deaf Carnivals were held in 1911 and continued regularly until the Games in its current format started in Sydney in 1964. The most recent Games were held on the Gold Coast in January 2008.

KC Chiefs RB Johnson Sacked after Gay Slurs

As Larry Johnson nears the Kansas City Chiefs' all-time rushing record, more than 10,000 fans have signed an online petition pleading for team officials to deactivate the running back after he posted homosexual slurs on his Twitter account.

The petition — which has garnered 10,716 signatures as of early Thursday — calls on general manager Scott Pioli to act before Johnson, 29, surpasses running back Priest Holmes for the team rushing record.

"We are asking you, as fans of this team, this organization, and of the pride that this city has in the Chiefs, please deactivate Larry Johnson," the petition reads. "Please do not let his name sit atop the all-time rushing leaders in Kansas City Chiefs history. He needs a mere 80 yards to surpass Priest. He doesn't deserve that opportunity."

Johnson, a former Pro Bowler, was suspended late last month for conduct detrimental to the team after he questioned coach Todd Haley's qualifications and posted two homosexual slurs on his Twitter account, including one in which he called another user a "Christopher street boy," an apparent reference to New York City's Christopher Street, which is synonymous with the city's gay-pride movement.

"Larry Johnson is a disgrace to the NFL and should not be allowed to play because of his behavior and the remarks that he has made," petitioner Patrick Gilman wrote.

Another petitioner, Jason Shukeat, called Johnson an "embarrassment" to the 1-6 Chiefs, who are mired in last place in the AFC West.

"It will be a travesty if he is allowed to return from his latest misconduct," Shukeat wrote. "Between beating women and voicing slurs toward fans and media, there is absolutely no reason this trash should even have a job, much less become the franchise's all-time leading rusher. With new management and coaching this year, Johnson needs to be gone to show that the attitude within the organization has changed and that we will not stand for thugs on this team."

Since being drafted by the Chiefs in 2003, Johnson has been arrested four times for various degrees of battery, including one incident in which the Maryland native pleaded guilty to disturbing the peace after allegedly spitting in the face of a woman at a Kansas City nightclub.

Johnson later received two years' probation and was ordered to attend a domestic violence diversion program for an earlier arrest. In 2007, Johnson signed a five-year contract extension that could be worth up to $45 million, including $19 million guaranteed.

Bob Moore, director of public relations for the Chiefs, said the team would not comment on the petition. Johnson will return to the team next week following his suspension and $315,000 penalty.

"He's due to come back next Monday," Moore said.

Johnson's agent, Peter Schaffer, did not return calls seeking comment Thursday. He told The Associated Press that Johnson has learned from the incident.

"Larry apologized," Schaffer said. "He learned from it and hopefully other people learned from it. My hope is that people learn that something positive can come out of this and that there are words that should not be used because they demean people."

Johnson's comment led Jarrett Barrios, president of the Gay & Lesbian Allaince Against Defamation, to call on the NFL and the Chiefs to take disciplinary actions against the running back, calling the incident a chance to educate on the "dangers of homophobia" in sports.

Through a spokesman, Johnson apologized for the incident on Oct. 22.

"I regret my actions," he said. "The words were used by me in frustration, and they were not appropriate. I did not intend to offend anyone, but that is no excuse for what I said."

Johnson continued, "I'm going to work to that point to get my life back on track and know that I and I alone put myself in these critical situations and environments to where things don't come out favorably to me."

Despite the apology, Kansas City fans are still calling for Johnson's helmet.

"Allowing Larry Johnson to attain a record is something that can never be erased," the petition reads. "In a year where the team is trying to look toward the future with many young players, please don’t add to the collective morose this city is feeling by allowing one of the truly great players, people, and role models in this city’s sporting history to be replaced in the record books by someone who we don’t like and who doesn’t like us."

Nancy Lieberman: Head Coach "Dallas Mavericks"

DALLAS (AP)—The first woman to play pro basketball with guys is also the first hired to coach them.

Hall of Famer Nancy Lieberman was introduced Thursday as the head coach of the Dallas Mavericks’ affiliate in the NBA Development League, which will tip off next November.

The D-League team is partially owned by Donnie Nelson, the Mavericks’ president of basketball operations. Hiring Lieberman was his idea, and he’s confident young men won’t have a problem taking orders from a woman—at least, not this woman.

“She’s got the skins, the experience—she knows what she’s doing—so I certainly hope that we’re well beyond those issues,” Nelson said. “Besides, if you can’t respect authority, no matter what form or color it comes in, I don’t want you on my team.”

Lieberman has been a basketball pioneer since she was 17 and made the U.S. Olympic team for the first women’s tournament, at the 1976 Montreal Games. She starred at Old Dominion and in various women’s pro leagues, then in 1986 played for the Springfield Fame of the United States Basketball League. When the WNBA started, she returned as a player, and later was a coach and general manager. She returned briefly as a player in July 2008, at age 50.

Kobe Bryant(notes) later told her that he and his daughters were watching during her latest comeback. He also asked, “Why would you put your reputation on the line like that?” She told him she did it because she had no fear—and that’s exactly why she’s taking on this challenge.

“I feel like I’m the right person for the job,” she said. “I know how these guys feel. I played in the minor leagues. I’m ultimately connected to that part of development in a player’s life.”

She’s also proud to break another gender barrier, one she hopes “could be the last barrier.”

“I kind of look at President Obama,” she said. “Everybody knows it’s historical because he’s a man of color. But at the end of the day, regardless of his race, creed, color or gender, he has to be president. Everybody knows I’m a woman, but at the end of the day, regardless of my race, creed, color or gender, I have to win basketball games.

“In 1986, my goal was not to be a girl playing in a men’s league, it was to be a player in a men’s league,” she added. “In 2010, I don’t want to be a woman who is coaching men, I want to be a coach who is coaching.”

NBA commissioner David Stern, a strong supporter of the development league and women’s basketball, called the hiring “great news for all.”

“This is wonderful for the NBA D-League,” Stern said. “A basketball pioneer and Hall of Famer continues her journey.”

While the hiring is the most notable in D-League history, it’s no publicity stunt.

Lieberman has lived in the Dallas area for 28 years and happens to live about 3 miles from the new D-League team’s gym in Frisco, a north suburb. She’s run summer camps for girls and boys since 1983, so long that she’s now teaching the children of some former pupils.

Her involvement on every level of basketball, along with the obvious marketing benefit, is part of why Nelson calls the hiring “a no-brainer.”

“What she’s done on a grass-roots level for basketball around here is second-to-none, and her experience can rival anybody’s in basketball, from Olympics to professional to being in the Hall of Fame,” Nelson said. “That, and the D-League is all about dreaming coming true, providing opportunities.”

Staying close to home is especially important to Lieberman because her son, T.J., is 15 and she wants to keep watching him play basketball.

“When I told him I was going to do this, he was so excited,” she said. “That was so different from when I came back last summer. He was like, ‘Ma, come on.’ But then the night I played, kids were blowing up his cell phone and he’s like, ‘Dude! I’m here with her! We’re making history!”’

The Mavericks will loan several players from their roster to the Frisco club and obviously will have input on other signees. Lieberman said she would like to watch Mavs coach Rick Carlisle so she can run the same drills and use similar technical terms to make the transition between the teams easier on all the players.

Longtime NBA coach Del Harris will be the team’s general manager. Former slam dunk champion Spud Webb, who is from the area, will be president of basketball operations. The team has yet to be officially named.

Yankees christen new stadium with a title - MLB - Yahoo! Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ge-yankeesclinch110409&prov=yhoo&type=lgns)

---Quote---
NEW YORK – The ghosts may have been abandoned across the street, where the House that Ruth Built is awaiting the imminent arrival of the wrecker’s ball. But from old to new, the New York Yankees left no doubt in the House that George Built that their championship tradition runs as straight and true as a pinstripe.

The Yankees won their 27th World Series title and first in the new Yankee Stadium by beating the Philadelphia Phillies 7-3 Wednesday night to take the 105th World Series in six games.

They christened their new $1.5 billion home in the same style as the original back in 1923, when the heroes were a left-handed slugger named Babe Ruth and a left-handed pitcher named Herb Pennock. Ruth hit three home runs, including one in the World Series clincher, and Pennock won twice, including the finale.

Eighty-six years later, only the names changed. Left-handed slugger Hideki Matsui(notes), in possibly his last game in a Yankee uniform, tied a Series record by driving in six runs and hit his third home run of the Series, a two-run blast in the second that was the Yankees’ first shot across the bow against Phillies starter Pedro Martinez(notes).

Matsui, whose aching knees limited him to a pinch-hitting role in the three games in Philadelphia, had hit a tie-breaking home run off Martinez in the Yankees’ Game 2 win and demonstrated anew that if Martinez wanted to discuss his ancestry, his Yankee “daddy” was the venerable Japanese star.

Matsui hit a two-run single in the third off Martinez, then doubled in two more against Phillies’ rookie J.A. Happ(notes) in the fifth.

Left-handed pitcher Andy Pettitte(notes), pitching on three days’ rest, won the duel of old goats, as it was called by Martinez, holding the Phillies to a single run while the Yankees built a 7-1 lead against the 38-year-old Martinez and relievers Chad Durbin(notes) and J.A. Happ.

Pettitte, a sellout crowd of 50,315 creating chills independent of the 47-degree temperatures by thunderously chanting his name, came out in the sixth after giving up a two-run home run to Ryan Howard(notes), the strikeout-ridden Phillies slugger, and a two-out double to Raul Ibanez(notes).

Despite walking five batters, a number he has exceeded just once in 40 postseason starts, the 37-year-old Pettitte won for the second time in the Series and joined Boston’s Derek Lowe(notes) (2004) and Chicago’s Freddy Garcia(notes) (2005) as the only pitchers to win the clinching game in all three rounds of the playoffs: the division series, the LCS and the World Series.

Pettitte has won 18 postseason games, the most of any pitcher in history, including four this season. He also was the winner in a clinching game for the sixth time in his career, the most of any pitcher.

The last 10 outs were recorded by the Yankees bullpen, the final five by Mariano Rivera(notes), who with Pettitte, catcher Jorge Posada(notes) and shortstop Derek Jeter(notes) are the only players left from the last Yankees team to win it all, in 2000. Manager Joe Girardi, in his second season, was with the Yankees as a reserve catcher for World Series titles in 1996, 1998 and 1999 but left as a free agent before the 2000 season.

With their bookend Series titles, the Yankees now can make a compelling case that they are the team of the decade, having won more regular-season games (965) and playoff series (10) than any other team, and joining the Boston Red Sox as the only teams to win two Series titles.

The Yankees had four 100-win seasons in the decade, including 103 in 2009 after new owner Hal Steinbrenner, taking over for his ailing father, George, gave general manager Brian Cashman the green light to spend over $243 million on three players – starting pitchers CC Sabathia(notes) and A.J. Burnett(notes) and first baseman Mark Teixeira(notes).

Sabathia and Burnett each won a game in the Series while Teixeira, who came into Wednesday night batting just .105 in the World Series and .172 in the postseason, singled home a run in the Yankees’ three-run fifth.

And, of course, the Yankees are the most successful franchise of all time. Their 27 titles are 17 more than that of the St. Louis Cardinals, who have won the second-most in baseball.

The Phillies fell short in their quest to become the first National League team since the 1975-76 Cincinnati Reds to win back-to-back Series titles.

Martinez, the self-styled “old goat” who didn’t join the Phillies until August, had counted upon “experience and survival” and his “frog’s blood” to carry him in a quest to add a triumphant coda to his rich history against the Yankees.

But Martinez lasted just four innings, succumbing to the master strokes of Matsui.

Lingerie Football League Set to Start New Season

The Lingerie Football League offers players who could be the offspring of an NFL-Victoria’s Secret marriage.

If you’re interested in girl-on-girl action — and sports — there’s a new league that’s just the ticket. The Lingerie Football League offers players who could be the offspring of an NFL-Victoria’s Secret marriage. And while two New York and Philadelphia teams are tangling in some other sport, the New York Majesty and the Philadelphia Passion are squaring off tomorrow night in their first gridiron game — and it promises to show more than just pigskin.

touch-football played by women afraid to break a nail. (There’s sure to be plenty of touching, though.) This is a full-body tackle sport, and the team, buffed and bruised from weeks of practice, plays like it has something to prove.

SLIDESHOW: Click for photos of LFL players and teams.

“We’re going to war here,” says Majesty quarterback Krystal Gray, a 24-year-old from Buffalo. “Football is such a fast game that you don’t have time to think about what kind of uniform you are wearing. If you are distracted for even a split second, you can lose the ball.”

Since the women do need to run, catch and tackle, their uniforms are more akin to what Olympic volleyball players might wear than the lace teddy of a true seductress. Still, volleyball players don’t usually wear garter belts around their thighs or chokers around their necks. LFL players do.

Majesty head coach Henry Racich has been working overtime to get his first lingerie-clad football team ready for their premier game. He tells us that he had the entire team move into his house for a week, where he could oversee three practice sessions a day, treating them like any men’s team he would coach.

Battle of Los Angeles begins: Dodgers owner fires wife - Big League Stew - MLB - Yahoo! Sports (http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Battle-of-Los-Angeles-begins-Dodgers-owner-fire?urn=mlb,197702)

---Quote---
Well that certainly didn't take long.

Less than 24 hours after the team was bounced from the NLCS, the battle for control of the Los Angeles Dodgers quickly escalated with the news that CEO and owner Frank McCourt has fired his wife, Jamie, as the team's president.

The couple is going through a bitter divorce and both had said they do not want to cede their roles with the team. Before being shown the door, Jamie McCourt had been baseball's highest-ranked female executive.

SI.com's Jon Heyman first reported the news of the firing on Thursday:

"Jamie McCourt was fired within the last two days, according to several sources. But this is not likely to be the last she's heard from, as she has said through lawyers that she intends to stake a claim to the franchise, which may be worth a billion dollars, or more.

"Reached by phone Thursday afternoon, Frank McCourt declined comment."

There are a lot of definitions for the term "irreconcilable differences," but "husband terminated wife from job" has to be at the top of the list. We all knew this could turn very ugly when the split was made public last week and with Frank making such a dramatic move, it seems certain that it won't end amicably.

On Thursday night, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times reported that Jamie McCourt is "believed to be lining up investors for a possible effort to buy out her husband and gain sole control of the team." In addition, "she is believed to have started calling prominent baseball figures, with the intention of arranging meetings to discuss the direction of the team."

According to the latest franchise valuations by Forbes, the Dodgers are worth $722 million. Frank McCourt's attorney says that there are documents that prove Frank owns the Dodgers 100 percent. Meanwhile, Jamie McCourt's attorney says that ownership would fall under California's community property law, which would call for a 50-50 split of the team.

It remains to be seen who is right, but for the Dodgers, their fans and Major League Baseball, this just isn't a matter of a problem between two adults. As we saw with the recent situation in San Diego — the Moores' divorce eventually forced the sale of the Padres to Jeff Moorad— a marital battle over property can certainly hurt the on-field product as it becomes much harder to spend money on free agency or even existing contracts.

The Dodgers will almost surely feel the pain and, one offseason after the saga of the Manny Ramirez(notes) saga dragged on and on, it looks like they're entering a messy soap opera with a few more consequences on the line.
