Hi,
i'm teaching at a special school for the deaf in Poland. After high school pupils must take part in an exams which are in a written form. I find it strange because if their native language is the sign language then why do they have to pass the exams using the foreign language.
I wanted to ask how the exams in special schools look like? Do you pass them using sign language (for example in history or geography) or do you write them?
Maybe i'm wrong and everebody in the same country should write the exams using the official language.
I would really appreciate all your opinions and information how it looks like in the USA.

Michigan State University Deaf Education Program Closing

I'm currently a student at MSU in the Deaf Education program. On November 9, we received an email stating that pending approval from the university governance, MSU will stop accepting applicants for its Deaf Ed program in the spring of 2010, and all students currently enrolled will need to be finished by the year 2013. MSU is the only school in our state that teaches Deaf Ed using ASL (Eastern Michigan University has an oral program), and the students here are extremely concerned, upset, and shocked that MSU is considering cutting such a unique and vital program. Since the news has come out, we have had an outpouring of support around us both on campus and throughout the community.

We have since started a petition that we plan to present to the University president and would love any support we can get - please ignore the donation request at the end of the petition - you don't have to donate money and it does not go towards our cause, its an ad for the website.

Keep Deaf Education Program at Michigan State University Petition : [ powered by iPetitions.com ] (http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/DeafEd_MSU/)

In addition, we are planning to hold a rally on Dec. 4 at 10:00 am in front of the Hannah Administration Building on campus to protest against the university's decision to close this program. I'll also post some links to various facebook pages we have with more information as well. The students here at MSU believe strongly in our program and in the future of our students!

My deaf resources for teaching myself ASL

I finally found the box in our garage from the move from Missouri.

I have Signing for Dummies with CD
The American Sign Language Phrase Book by Lou Fant
2 puzzle books for Lou Fant's book
A Spark Chart for ASL
I also use LifePrint.com and ASLPro.com

I have been checking out stuff from the library as well.

What I need to ask is:

Most of the videos at the library (VHS and DVD) are the ones to teach children and babies signing. Since I am ahem...46, Other than being a little young for me, would they be good for me to use. I learn better by seeing it done as opposed to pictures in a book.

I do have a webcam on my netbook that I don't like to use, but not on my desktop.

Can anyone make any suggestions?

I cannot afford to go to the local college for any classes and I am waiting for the local Deaf Service Center to have an ASL class. Their donations have dropped off and their not sure when they will have a class.

LOTE for Deaf children

Growing up, I was never given a chance to participate in LOTE (Languages other than English) classes in primary and secondary schools. All of the schools I attended just did not have the resources to teach me another language, which I thought was unfair. I have always wanted to learn another language, but never given the chance to do so.

NSW Government recently allocated over $2 million dollars to establish a bilingual program at 4 schools in NSW over the next 4 years. Children will start learning an Asian language in Kindergarten, and continue learning until they reach the end of their primary schooling years. Those classes will run for 90 minutes each day. I personally think this is a waste of time, especially for those whose English skills are declining due to lack of proper English education. I'm also concerned about deaf children in NSW schools not having access to a LOTE class at their school.

NSW is very behind QLD, Vic and Tas as it has not yet introduced Auslan into schools statewide. Signed English is still being used in NSW schools, which I think is appalling, as deaf children statewide are unaware of the Deaf community and Auslan, and they have no access to Deaf role model, which is quite sad.

I am asking you guys... in your country, have you had a chance to learn another language when you were in school? If so, please post with your answer and how you experienced it.

Hey, I'm new to ASL, and I saw a deaf translator translate a song that was playing at a restaraunt. They told me in order to do interpretive signing, I had to learn gloss. Could someone help me gloss this? I want to learn how to sign it!
*EDIT* If possible, could someone make a video on how to sign it also? I found a site called ASLpro.com, but piecing it bit by bit is hard. >.<

Okay I have a quick question that I would like everyones opinion on.
I am going to college in Fall 2010 and I've been thinking about pursuing deaf education for some time. I am not deaf nor hoh and I'm not sure how I would be perceived as I have no past ASL experience and no one in my family is deaf or hoh.

Would this bother deaf students or not?

I'm currently in the process of applying as a transfer student and I should know in the next few months if I get accepted or not - I really, really hope I do! I'm so nervous...

Anyway, my mother asked me to make a list of all of the things I will need to buy as far as clothing and winter necessities go so we can start collecting after the winter season and catch all the good sales. The only problem is I have never lived through a winter. I mean, a real winter. I live in the Southern US and before that I lived in Europe. I'm not sure I've even seen more than 2 inches of snow in the last decade. I think anything colder than 70 degrees is cold. :D Oh boy. I do not know what I'm in for. I thought (stupidly) that I would just need a winter coat. This is obviously wrong. What would you recommend I get... beyond the winter coat, of course? Yikes!
