Sony has a strategy for upping the quality of its content and providing an incentive for gamers to upgrade their home entertainment systems next year, and it involves the PS3 going 3D.
A presentation to investors yesterday underlined that the PlayStation 3 will be a fully 3D-capable game console by the end of 2010, and that a firmware update would share this upgrade across all existing PS3s. A few demos of PS3 3D gaming have been shown previously, but the news of an across-the-board firmware update is new. Of course, a gamer would still need a 3D-capable Bravia HDTV and glasses, the latter of which haven't been announced yet.
We're curious how the quality will be--Nvidia's 3D game technology, now being embedded into laptops, looks great, but requires a 120Hz monitor for fluid motion. But it's a smart idea, if manufacturers want anyone to adopt 3D tech, to include it as a Trojan horse inside laptops and game consoles. And we hope it works on HDTVs other than specific Bravias. It doesn't sound like the PS3 will double as a 3D Blu-ray player, but we certainly hope that's the case.
Does 3D gaming appeal to you? How about 3D movie-watching? We're certain to hear a lot more 3D news at CES. (Via Kotaku)

Hi,
i'm teaching at a special school for the deaf in Poland. After high school pupils must take part in an exams which are in a written form. I find it strange because if their native language is the sign language then why do they have to pass the exams using the foreign language.
I wanted to ask how the exams in special schools look like? Do you pass them using sign language (for example in history or geography) or do you write them?
Maybe i'm wrong and everebody in the same country should write the exams using the official language.
I would really appreciate all your opinions and information how it looks like in the USA.

I was just petting my cats and wow one of them felt like she had bumpy skin.

It's a pure bred rag doll cat. So hairy and all!

For this sort of inconvenience I went ahead and held her upside down to investigate. While she was upside down being the rag doll cat, her head stooped backwards far enough to touch my feet while i was standing!

This allowed every pore of her skin to stretch apart considerably - making it easier for me to dig around to see what was up.

I saw a ton of zits, some of them black, some of them open and bleeding.

I also found some spider mites and their webbings. I used a 60x magnification hand held scope to check that out. Very small red critters crawling around.

WHAT DO I DO?

Oh and good morning.

Aftershocks may be delayed by centuries, say scientists

---Quote---
Some violent earthquakes that have occurred unexpectedly in places with no recent record of tremors may be the aftershocks of quakes that took place decades or centuries ago, scientists have discovered.

The finding could explain the many unexpected earthquakes that hit the centre of continental shelves, such as the disastrous quake in Sichuan, in the heart of China, that killed at least 68,000 people and injured up to 400,000 more, in 2008.

At 7.9 on the Richter scale, it was one of the deadliest quakes in history.

Earthquakes usually occur at the boundary of two or more tectonic plates but can also occur hundreds of kilometres from a fault line. These earthquakes may be the result of delayed aftershocks rather than background seismic activity, scientists believe.

A study that tested how tectonic faults work has found that the further away an earthquake is from such faultlines, the more likely it could be the delayed aftershock of a previous earthquake. Mian Liu, professor of geological sciences at the University of Missouri-Columbia, said scientists have tried to predict the occurrence of larger earthquakes by looking at the frequency of smaller ones, which is why the Sichuan earthquake was a surprise.

"Until now, we've mostly tried to tell where large earthquakes will happen by looking at where small ones do," Mr Liu said.

A magnitude 7 earthquake that occurred in 1811 near a town on the Mississippi is still causing aftershocks that can be felt in the American Midwest.

"A number of us had suspected this because many of the earthquakes we see today in the Midwest have patterns that look like aftershocks. They happen on the faults we think caused the big earthquakes in 1811 and 1812, and they've been getting smaller with time," Liu said.

The research may help to predict when and where an earthquake is likely, said Professor Seth Stein at Northwestern University.

"Instead of just focusing on where small earthquakes happen, we need to use methods like GPS satellites and computer modelling to look for places where the earth is storing up energy for a large future earthquake," Stein said.
