Apologies if this is a covered tic already...

I am totally deaf in one ear, and I have a vestibular schwanomma in the other ear, and I know that I will eventually be totally deaf someday. Best part is that I don't know when - could be 3 years from now, could be 40. But I WILL be deaf someday.

So, I try to prepare myself for what will be a massive change, when it happens.msometimes I plug my good ear to try to sense what it would be like to be in that situation if I were deaf.

I try to prepare a business for myself, one that I coul perform with or without hearing.

But when I look at my life with my family, with my young children, with my wife, I wonder how do you keep that relationship, as strong?

How is being deaf not isolating?

Verizon Unlimited Data Plans For Grandfathered Customers To End Soon

A Verizon exec has announced that the company plans to do away with its unlimited data plans for grandfathered customers in favor of new tiered "data share" plans, effectively killing off the final unlimited plans at the nation's largest mobile carrier.

As first reported by FierceWireless, Verizon CFO Fran Shammo told a crowd at J.P. Morgan's Technology, Media and Telecom conference in Boston that eventually the company would force all of its current unlimited users over to data sharing, a new kind of "family" plan which launches on Verizon in the summer and allows members of a family to share a set amount of data across all of their devices. In other words, rather than paying for data by the device, a family could purchase, say, 100GB of data per month that everyone on the plan would be able to share. So if Mom uses 80GB of data, and Dad uses 2GB of data, and Little Jimmy uses 16GB of data, it doesn't matter -- you're just paying for that 100GB of data across all of your devices (smartphones, tablets, netbooks, smart refrigerators, whatever).

Though Verizon ended unlimited data for new customers in July 2011, America's largest wireless carrier allowed its old customers to keep their unlimited plans so long as they stuck with the company. That's ending: "Everyone will be on data share," FierceWireless has quoted Shammo as saying.

You can listen to Shammo's comments here; the part about unlimited plans ending begins around the 10 minute mark.

A Verizon spokesperson declined to expand when asked to confirm Shammo's statement regarding the axing of unlimited plans. "We don’t have anything to add to our CFO’s comments," the rep said in an email to HuffPost.

As PhoneArena points out, this is good news for small businesses and families (depending on how expensive the new data share plans are). It's also potentially good news for smartphone owners who also have 4G tablets, who would no longer have to buy a separate data plan for their tabs. All of this depends on the pricing of these data share plans, however, which Verizon has yet to outline.

Though Verizon would not comment on exactly when those grandfathered unlimited data plans will disappear, the move has seemed inevitable for some time now. Verizon has been cutting down on heavy users of unlimited data, throttling the speeds of the top five percent of unlimited data users. A Verizon spokesperson declined to comment on when those unlimited plans will disappear.

Shammo did give a hint in his speech, indicating that when grandfathered customers upgrade from 3G phones (like the iPhone) to 4G LTE phones (like any Android phone, or perhaps the next-generation iPhone), they could be forced to abandon their unlimited plans for a data share plan.

That would mean that only Sprint and AT&T offered unlimited data plans: Sprint to new customers, and AT&T to those subscribers grandfathered in. AT&T, like Verizon, killed off unlimited data for new customers in 2011.

The big question that remains is when the end of unlimited data at Verizon for grandfathered customers will take effect. We'll update you when we get official word from the carrier.

I planted some bird seed. A bird came up. Now I don't know what to

I had amnesia once---or twice---I think.

I went to San Francisco. I found someone's heart. Now what?

Protons have mass? I didn't even know they were Catholic.

All I ask is a chance to prove that money can't make me happy.

If the world were a logical place, men would be the ones who ride
horses sidesaddle.

What is a "free" gift? Aren't all gifts free?

They told me I was gullible and I believed them.

Teach a child to be polite and courteous in the home, and when he grows
up, he'll never be able to merge his car onto the freeway.

Experience is the thing you have left when everything else is gone.

One nice thing about egotists: they don't talk about other people.

I used to be indecisive. Now I'm not sure.

How can there be self-help "groups"?

If swimming is so good for your figure, how do you explain whales?

Show me a man with both feet firmly on the ground, and I'll show you a
man who can't get his pants off.

Is it me -- or do buffalo wings taste like chicken?

Hi all,

Given that you are surfing this site, you most likely have an idea of how much hearing problems can affect someone’s life and may be willing to help our cause (/World Wide Hearing) by investing 2 minutes of your time and voting for our video. You can as well feel free to forward the information below.
In brief, WWH’s (wwhearing.org) mission is to provide children and teenagers in developing countries with affordable hearing aids. This is a video taken during a recent pilot project:
Bilal's Story - YouTube
We are currently in process of applying for government funding which would allow us to launch our first major project. One criterion used to evaluate our application is the number of “likes” we get for our video at
crs.applications.grandchallenges.ca/en/viewVideo/28735E6AA7E936A8937B26

If you think this cause is worthy, please click on “Log in to like this video” and register using your email address (“create a new account”) and confirm the registration using the link sent to your email. Then log in to like the video. All of this takes less than 2 minutes. The voting will close end of May 2012.

As WWH is not the standard applicant to this program (we innovate in business rather than in e.g. medicine), each vote matters even more. Feel free to help us spreading the word by posting this on your own wall. Thanks so much for your support!

I hope it is ok for me to post this here and truly appreciate your time.

.A New York man vows to go into debt to get a beloved pet back from his ex-girlfriend. And he's not the only one willing to pick a legal fight over a barking companion
Breaking up is hard to do. And for Craig Dershowitz, it's getting awfully expensive. The 34-year-old New Yorker's ex-girlfriend, Sarah Brega, took their dog, Knuckles, when she moved to California after their split, and he's suing to get the puggle — half pug, half beagle — back. So far, he has spent $60,000 on the cross-country legal fight. Here, a brief guide to this canine custody battle, and the increasing number of cases just like it:

Why is this guy so desperate to get his dog back?
Dershowitz says Knuckles is more than a pet to him... the animal is his "son," his "baby boy," his "everything." He says he raised "Knux" and cared for the dog since it was a puppy, registering it in his name and paying its vet bills. Dershowitz says he left the dog with Brega until he found a new place after they ended their four-year relationship. He agreed to share custody, but then, he says, Brega and Knuckles disappeared.

What did he do after Brega took the dog?
Dershowitz says he hired two private investigators to track down Brega, whom he accused of "dognapping" Knuckles. Then he filed a lawsuit to get the dog back. Dershowitz says his lawyer's bills have drained his bank account, so he has set up a website, "Rescue Knux," to solicit donations to finance his ongoing court battle. He's offering donors a "virtual kiss" from Knuckles for a $10 donation, a "Free Knux" T-shirt for $25, and a portrait of the dog for $200. For $250, you can play fetch with the dog if it's returned to New York. So far, he has raised about $1,200.

What does his ex say?
Brega says in court documents that Dershowitz "unconditionally gifted" her the dog. Besides, she says, "Knuckles lives a happy and healthy life in California with me, where he has ample room to play, and lives in close proximity to a beach for off-leash dog-park outings." Dershowitz initially got a default judgment demanding the dog's return, but Brega has since hired a lawyer to fight for the dog in New York and California courts.

Are there other cases like this?
Yes. In fact, the number of pet custody battles is rising. But these issues can give judges headaches, because while shared custody is common for children, pets are technically property. So like other things divvied up in divorce court, they must go to one party or the other. But as more people resolve to fight for their pets, that's changing, divorce attorney Ken Altshuler tells The Associated Press. "Judges are viewing them more akin to children than dining room sets. They are recognizing that people have an emotional attachment to their animals."

Medical Student trying to improve awareness of SSD

Hello from the UK!

My name's Luke, and I am currently a medical student at Cambridge University. I've just learnt BSL Level 1 (not ASL - unfortunately!) to help me communicate with patients better, and it has recently occurred to me people with Single-Sided Deafness (SSD) tend to get somewhat overlooked.

I am therefore doing a project aimed at improving awareness of the rather unique challenges people with SSD face. If clinicians can better understand what it's like to have SSD, then their experiences in hospital can be greatly improved whether they are in for a hearing-related condition or not.

So far I've gone into quite a lot of detail about the neurology, and how it makes sound localisation extremely difficult. However, I'd really appreciate personal accounts of what it's like to experience these challenges (to save the presentation from turning into a lecture!). I know there are a few accounts posted on blogs out there, but it's very personal information and I'd feel a bit hesitant about lifting their text without their permission!

So yer, if you have SSD and a couple of minutes to spare, I'd be extremely grateful to hear what you have to say. If there's anyone who lost their hearing in one ear suddenly; or is used to having SSD and has had a BAHA fitted, that would also be fantastic :)

Thanks very much,

Luke

As you may know, I travel a lot. I like to take pictures of cool vehicles that I see on my trips. Those are ones that I didn't google up. I stopped and took pictures myself. Here is a Pontiac Safari wagon.

As you can see, it's pretty low to ground. Just think...when was the last time you saw a wagon like this one?? Do you remember having one like this?

If you don't like this wagon, don't worry, I'll put up a different classic next week :).
