Suit seeks to ban sales of popular video game

WEST PALM BEACH, Florida (AP) -- A lawsuit by Haitian groups that asks for the top-selling video game "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" to be removed from store shelves will be decided in federal court.

Haitian civil rights groups filed the lawsuit because the game instructs players to "kill the Haitians" and awards points for each kill.

The suit was filed December 23 in state circuit court in Palm Beach County. Attorneys for Rockstar Games Inc. opted to move the case to federal court, and that motion was granted Tuesday. No hearing dates were immediately set.

This suit is unacceptable and should be thrown out of the court. It's censorship, nothing more.

America isn't about censorship, at least it isn't supposed to be.

I remember that it asked me specifically to kill 30 Haitians in two minutes, but they also did ask me to kill 30 Cubans in 2 minutes too as well.

But they never said kill "ALL" Haitians. But it has been said that Two Take (the developer) will remove the words from the game.

I wouldn't take offense to it if it asked me to kill 30 Canadians, 30 Newfies, or anything either.

Again, it is a gangster game and it is pretty much expected. Perhaps they should try to use different words?

Therefore, this suit is pretty much no good.

But how would you feel if the game were called Ethnic Cleanser and the instructions were to kill 30 Deaf people in 2 minutes?

That's different, this game isn't called Ethic Cleanser. It's called Grand Theft Auto.

We are not talking about how we would feel about other games. We are talking about THIS game.

It's moot....GTA Vice City was released for the PS2 in October 2K2. Isn't that TOO LATE to complain considering there's over 2 to 3 million copies of the game in PS2, PC and xbox versions floating around?!

If they complained when it was released in October 2K2, it would have merit but hey it's too late so I have a feeling that it would be tossed outa the Court.

I would still think it was stupid. A game is a game. How do you think it would look if someone in Africa created a game called "Grand Theft Auto: In Da Hood". In that game, you're a black gangster and you're supposed to kill a bunch of white people. OMG! That's so racist! Oh, give me a break. Who gives a shit. Like I said, it's only a game.

Exactly—it’s just a video game—get over it. Even if somebody were to market a game such as the one I described, or came up with some title such as Turkish Delight: Kill the Armenians, I would still grudgingly have to respect their right to market such a game. Most of you are too young to remember this, but in 1977 a faction of the American Nazi Party planned to stage a rally in Skokie, Illinois—a heavily Jewish suburb of Chicago that is home to the largest population of concentration camp survivors in the United States. Needless to say, there was a massive amount of controversy surrounding the issue, and the battles lines were drawn in court. The ACLU vehemently fought for the Nazi’s right to assembly, even though they openly admitted that it was painful for them to do so. The U.S. Supreme Court eventually ruled in favor of the Nazi Party, and the march took place as scheduled. So I really don’t think the Haitian community has much of a leg to stand on in their attempts to sue for reparations over a goddamn video game.

If they made a game where you had to kill specific people and deaf people were one of them, I'd probably get the game. The challenge would be to find someone who's walking around waving their hands in the air. VROOM! Run them over! Heh! Actually, I'm kidding. I don't really care.

There's already a movie and game called Death Race 2000. The purpose of the race is to win while running over specific people. Drivers get various points depending on who they run over:
  • kids
  • men
  • women
  • elders
  • wheelchairers
  • hookers
  • bonus...
    • virgins
I think it's hilarious!

That’s the best laugh I’ve had all day. It wouldn’t be much fun taking out Deaf people though—there’s no challenge in it. Since they always stand around in groups of 10, all facing each other and blocking everybody's way, it’s too easy to mow them all down at once.

Now that you mention it... that would really make the game too easy and boring!
