Universal Studios has always provided SDH when they started releasing movies on DVDs and Blu-ray Discs. Rental discs? I remember Walt Disney did not provide either closed captioning or SDH on their rental discs for the movie, "Up".

Here's the list of Film production companies that have SDH in Blu Ray:
DreamWorks SKG 20th Century Fox Fox Searchlight Pictures Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer United Artists Paramount Pictures and so on, they all have SDH in Blu Ray... but only Universal Studios don't.

Walmart.com: Cowboys & Aliens (Extended Edition) (Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Copy + UltraViolet Copy) (Widescreen): Blu-ray *checking my Iron Man 2 blu-ray*....Paramount does work with SDH... *checking my Green Zone blu-ray*... Unversal studio does work with SDH... |

However in your other comment you said no English subtitles/SDH on those rental movies, no shit? I suspect those rental movies are REPRODUCED without subtitles by Universal Studio for rental purpose only. I suggest you to try another rental movie store or Redbox to see if those same movies have subtitles or not. If they do, obviously those movies you already rented from the first place are reproduced ones. I believe that Netflix also buy reproduced movies without subtitles which are cheaper to own copyrights because I remember that this company said that they are adding subtitles through its own captioning system. That's why Netflix doesn't offer new releases with subtitles, I guess. Amazon.com shows that those movies for purchase have English subtitles or SDH or both. Hopefully someone else who already rented any of those BD movies will let us know. |

As for Banjo, yes, I scrolled everywhere and not one single info that show SDH. So, I'm going to write a complant to both Studio and FCC and ADA.

Well, it's programmed with the list of menu, it's not like CC that have "decoded" where it can stripped out. If it's subtitle, it's programmed into the DVD and should listed in the menu. You know what I mean?

Sometimes, as a result, they remove the SDH tracks. This is what happened with the "Up" release from Disney. They had to correct it. |

Do you go to Blockbuster in person or get it by mail or order streaming movies from BB online? In my area, there were two Blockbuster locations but they are closed for good. Chase Bank bought both of them. Anyway, if you go to BB in person, why don't you try Redbox or other places? It might make a difference. |

No, I use mail order DVD and yes, my nearest BB store was closed for good too. What I'm planning to do is to ask my step daughter to rent one of those movies (Netflix) above and see if it's the same thing happen.

I already saw all of the movies you mentioned above. However my son downloaded them online (free, shhh) and I burned them into DVDs (not in Blu-ray Disc format anyway). All of them were subtitled. I was planning to buy a BD burner for my PC but he said no, get a new video card with HDMI output instead and he can download BD movies online for me. So when I upgrade my video card and connect it to my HDTV via HDMI, I will let you know after I watch those movies again in BD format. Maybe I will order a new video card from Newegg.com today. |
