I have made up a listing of new Blackberry Internet applications that I have found on the Internet, for those of you who are Blackberry users:

IMPORTANT: These applications require "Multimedia Data Gateway" (MDS/MDG) to be included on your Blackberry. You must be using a carrier that includes this service Nextel, Telus, or be using a MDS hosting service such as Lormar Logic's new $39.95-per-year DeafBES.

  • WebMessenger for Blackberry
AIM/ICQ/MSN/Yahoo Instant Messenger. Trillian-style all-in-one client! The most popular software program listed here. (Cost: Subscription at $4 per month paid annually at $48)
    .
  • Reqwireless Web Viewer for Blackberry
Professional version of full color HTML browser. Beginning with Blackberry OS 3.7.1.x and later, images downloads and renders very noticeably faster in Reqwireless (>50% faster) than images in the RIM Blackberry Web Browser, with the same image quality level. (Cost: $29.95 one-time; free trial)
    .
  • Reqwireless HotViewer for Blackberry
Reqwireless also has a Hotmail client available (HotViewer) and an Email attachment viewer. This allows you to also be able to read your Hotmail emails (in addition to your regular Blackberry emails!) (Cost: $29.95 one-time; free trial)
    .
  • Idokorro Mobile SSH for Blackberry (MCI Wireless IP-Relay)
Telnet/SSH utility, can be used for remotely logging onto Linux. Works great with MCI Wireless IP-Relay! Works with VT100 including PINE, EMACS, IRC, etc. Can also be used to access telnet BBS systems, routers, servers, old-style chat systems, MUD's, any UNIX systems, remote MacOS Darwin shell, MCI Wireless IP-Relay for the deaf, etc. Unlimited number of hosts, which is good for casual use. Expensive for the non-corporate user (Cost: one-time $199; free trial; ask for a deaf discount)
    .
  • BlackChat ICQ for Blackberry
This is a free ICQ client for Blackberry. It is an open source program, listed on this SourceForge page and the source code CVS is available. This source code can even be improved to include other chat networks if you are a knowledgeable developer, or even recycled by computer programmer to create new Blackberry Internet applications such as IRC. Everyone here needs more Blackberry Internet app developers! If you just want the software only, you can download the installable client. (Cost: free)
    .
  • Lormar Logic Wireless TTY For Blackberry
A realtime wireless TTY (text telephone) service for the deaf that requires MDS. Lormar Logic also provides other semi-realtime TTY services using WAP and AIM that does not require MDS. They also sell BES/MDS hosting to the deaf as well. (Cost: Varies)
    .
  • Alphanumeric Style Voice-To-Text Service: PhoneWire or DictoMail
This last service does not require MDS; it actually works with other devices other than Blackberry too. But this is a useful addition if you are used to paging services; you can now get third party paging-style service for any cellphone or any Blackberry, by using PhoneWire or DictoMail. They behave like voicemails, but all people's voicemails gets converted to text immediately and sent to you by email or SMS. So you read the voicemails. Just like alphanumeric dispatch. People also prefer to leave messages on voicemail rather than use paging operator; it is more user friendly. You can even give out your phone number without needing to explain that you're deaf!
    .
Multimedia Data is already included with Nextel and Telus Blackberries at this time. So you can just download and use this software. However, if you are using TMobile Blackberry, AT&T Blackberry, Cingular Blackberry, or another Blackberry, and you do not have access to Multimedia Data, please read The Hosted BES/MDS FAQ to find out how to get Multimedia Data installed on your Blackberry so you can use all these great Blackberry Internet software applications!

It is also rumored that AT&T and Rogers will be rolling out free included Multimedia Data service sometime at the end of 2004 with the new Version 4.0 Blackberry operating system, if you are on these carriers and don't want to purchase Multimedia Data service from a third-party provider in order to be able to get access to these Blackberry Internet applications.

If you plan to also in addition, use an external TDD/TTY with a Blackberry (not necessary if you use MCI Wireless IP-Relay or Lormar Logic), the good thing is that Blackberry is now TDD/TTY compatible so you can use a cable between Blackberry and TDD/TTY. If you do, you need a voice plan. Make sure to enable TDD/TTY mode in the Options of your Blackberry. That way, you can accept incoming calls. If you want to save money, you can just use Lormar Logic's Wireless TTY service.
