Droid or Not, Verizon Still Wants the iPhone

Quote:
It seems that Ivan Seidenberg thinks Steve Jobs has a thick skin.

Scott Olson/Getty Images Ivan SeidenbergEven though the wireless unit of Verizon Communications started an aggressive ad campaign for its new Droid handset that directly challenges the iPhone, Mr. Seidenberg, Verizon’s chief executive, said he would be delighted to sell Apple’s smartphone.

“We obviously would be interested at any point in the future that they would be interested in having us as a partner,” Mr. Seidenberg said in a conference call Monday to discuss Verizon’s third-quarter earnings. “This is a decision that is exclusively in Apple’s court.”

In the meantime, Verizon talked up its new line of smartphones, including Research in Motion’s touch-screen BlackBerry Storm 2, that it introduced Monday, and the Motorola Droid, a superthin phone that uses Google’s Android operating system, that will be unveiled on Wednesday.

“Our view is to broaden the base of choice for customers, and hopefully, along the way, Apple, as well as others, will decide to jump on the bandwagon,” he said.

Verizon added a net of 1.2 million wireless subscribers during the quarter — less than the 2 million added by AT&T, which sells the iPhone. That was a bit better than analysts expected.

Indeed, Verizon’s overall performance slightly beat expectations. Its wireless unit continues to be quite profitable and holding its own in the face of rising customer interest in cheaper prepaid plans.

Like a lot of companies, Verizon said that its corporate business appears to have stopped collapsing, although it hasn’t turned around yet.

There was hardly a sentence in the conference call that didn’t include the phrase “capital discipline,” as the company tried to reassure investors that its heavily marketed network reliability will not eat up all the profits.

Cutting jobs was another big theme. The company has said it will eliminate 8,000 jobs in the second half of this year, and it made it clear that it planned to cut many more in the future, especially in its wireline unit. Indeed, Verizon planned some sort of major restructuring over the next year to further consolidate facilities in its local phone companies.

For Verizon customers, there were only a few tidbits of what is coming up:

•A big push on the BlackBerry Storm 2 and the Android handsets this year.
•Palm handsets early next year.
•More integration between cellphones and wireline networks. (No details, but Verizon has talked about being able to use your phone as a remote control for your FiOS TV.)
•By the end of next year, faster wireless data for laptop card users in 25-30 big cities using Verizon’s new 4G network. Phones using 4G will take longer.
Mr. Seidenberg didn’t talk about whether all that cost-cutting and restructuring would disrupt the quality of service for Verizon’s home wireline customers.

Unlimited data/text will be $55, just like rest of smartphone, it don't include tethering.

iPhone OS 3.1.2 Unlock Accomplished, Dropping November 4

Geohot, the same hacker who first jailbroke OS 3.1.2, is now also the first to crack the 3.1.2 baseband. Previously, anyone who had unlocked their phone at version 3.0 or lower was fine as long as they were careful when upgrading, but anyone running 3.1 or higher was out of luck. Good news for anyone looking to unlock a newly purchased device. You'll have to be patient, though. The exploit won't be released until November 4

Yeah, You still have OS 3.1.1 jailbroken iphone. No problem. I still keep OS 3.0. I don't need jailbreaking.

I had heard that free Google Maps navigation app will be coming soon and includes search for points of interest by voice while in route, satellite and street view. But requires OS 3.2 .

I don't worry about it. I have my own Garmin GPS device.

Australian web designer spreads iPhone virus

Quote:
A YOUNG Australian web designer has become the first person to create a virus for Apple's wildly popular iPhone, The Daily Telegraph reports.

The worm, known as Ikee, changes the device's wallpaper to a picture of '80s singer Rick Astley with the words: "Ikee is never gonna give you up" - a reference to Astley's biggest chart hit - before trying to spread to other devices.

Several Australian users were affected, according to internet security company Sophos. It has not spread beyond Australia.

Ikee can infect only iPhones that have been unlocked or "jailbroken" - a practice that gives users the freedom to access the device remotely, share files and use with any SIM card.

IPhones purchased through regular channels on a plan with an authorised SIM are not at risk.

The virus is not destructive and does not compromise any data contained on the iPhone.

Ikee is the work of 21-year-old Sydney web designer and hobby programmer Ashley Towns, who revealed himself as the worm's author on Twitter under the name Ikeeex.

Towns said he created the Ikee virus to create awareness about having a secure password to protect your personal information.

"It's so simple to just change your password - it takes about 10 seconds maybe even less - and would protect all of your phone's personal data, SMSes, emails, address book, everything," he said.

Why would he do that? he will be charged for making a virus! - interesting that now people are aware that iphone can get virus just like the computers!

Dangerously driving a car with an iPhone

Here at TUAW we've seen lots of uses for the iPhone as a remote control, but if you were watching and thinking that those projects were way too safe, then the guys at Waterloo Labs have got you covered. They approached the project with a low budget and DIY attitude, building a low-cost (relatively speaking) car that is controlled by a first generation iPhone. Not content with just building the car, they also chose to car-surf on the hood and roof, Teen Wolf style, while testing their handiwork.

While we at TUAW do not condone such dangerous behavior, we can recommend that you watch this other video by Waterloo Labs as a more in-depth instructional video on how to build your own vehicle.

Wow!

It is not a dangerous virus, it is just a virus to let you know that your iPhone is not secure.

Anytime you connect to the Internet... it opens you up to viruses.

It can be delivered via a browser... or an e-mail client and people use both when they have smartphones like BlackBerry or iPhone.

You mean, connect it to the PC to access internet ? or Inside iPhone to connect to the Internet ?

It's a good thing that I learned somethin' about it BEFORE I buy iPhone. I will question an agent at AT&T about it BEFORE I buy it. I will buy iPhone ANYTIME after the 26th of Nov.

There is no such anti virus applications available for iPhone but you know, for these people with authorised SIM cards like locked to AT&T has nothing to worry about this virus and mine's unlocked, has a risk in getting this virus but I am not concerned at all as my iPhone's safe (either way, have no anti - virus < --- remember iPhone runs the same way like the iMacs do)

Just make sure you're not doing online banking or any important information like that on ANY smartphone and you shouldn't have to worry about theft, hackers and viruses.
