SSD vs HDD

SSD vs HDD Comparison

Faster startup - Since no spin-up required.

Faster boot and application launch time - Result of the faster read and especially seek time.

Lower power consumption and heat production - no mechanical parts result in less power consumption.

No noise - Lack of mechanical parts makes the SSD completely silent.

Better mechanical reliability - Lack of mechanical parts result in less wear and tear as well as the ability to endure extreme shock, vibration and temperatures.

Security - Quickly “wipe” of all data stored.

Deterministic performance - “Seek” time is constant, and performance does not deteriorate as the media fills up.

Lighter and smaller (typically)

Negative of SSD:

Cost - The solid state drives are still very expensive, and according to the price comparison but in the future, the cost will going down plus get more GB.

P3 netbook s hard drive is 16 GB SSD only. I really want 32 gb SSD or more.
But too expensive.

32 GB SSD - Approx. $100
256 GB SSD - Approx. $400 Wow too costly

It's all lies, SSD have a weakness that they didn't want to show. Highlander will tell you.

Well, SSD outperforms HDD in many aspects in testing. However, only one design limitation that engineers had no control over for now is the write-access lifespan.

The more writes to SSD memory, the shorter life SSD will be.

SSD is faster than HDD but it has short lifespan for writing.

Wrong section, it should be in computer section.

I'm sticking with HDD due games and movies.

HDD still faster than SSD for large file write only. HDD better for edit video, photoshop, large database, game and server.

You can get 3 hard drive or 5 hard drive with RAID 5 mode and it's still FASTER than SSD for write/read

1.5TB HDD = $130
Controller card (RAID 5) = $118

Three 1.5TB HDD + one controller card = 3TB (not 4.5TB) and over 150mb/sec (very faster than single SSD), longer cycle life and fault tolerance for $508.

SSD 512GB is $1,575.00

If one hard drive went fail(dead) then just hot-swap the old hard drive with new hard drive then auto rewrite itself. No loss the data.

My father own server with RAID 5 for over 15 years and he don't need to backup anything because RAID is real-time and backup don't. He had to replace the SCSI HDD for two times so far and nothing to lost the data for his business.

Thank you for explaining about SSD vs HDD. I consider that I might buy newer Dell Mini 10v in starting $299 which including 1.6 RAM and 120 HDD. I will download P3 software into it.

What I am doing too I am looking around for a netbook with HDD but remember not many webcam are supported in P3.

BestBuy have several Netbook with 160 HDD and I am plan ask Best Buy let me install P3 from my usb and test Netbook webcam.

I also saw some good price NetBook at Newegg with HDD too ..

So hard to decide which ones to get because of webcam compiable with P3 software.

You watch out for webcam megapixel (MP) of different netbooks. Webcam 1.3 MP is better video than 0.3 MP.

I'd second that!!

Yes, SSD do have weakness. On above posting, Post # 5 and #6, DeafAussie and Foxtrac said same thing what I would say, SSD do have short lifespan on read and write.

It have between 10,000 to 100,000 r/w cycle before it goes bad. Therefore, IT's UNPREDICTABLE!!

I am currently using 8GB SDHC Turbo 150X flash card (Adata brand) and It's plugged into SDHC to 44 pins IDE adapter in my old Dell Latitude CSxH 500mhz laptop. I knew the risk of having SSD drive due to lifespan but didn't care cuz I'm only using it for networking, simple game and word processing (similiar to what being used on Netbook)

It have Xubuntu installed and had no problem with it. It is not fast as you think, it's just average speed. I can't install Windows XP in SDHC drive cuz it'll go sloooowww. Why!!!?? It reads 22mpbs and write 10mbps. Remember that the Hard Drive can read 60mbps/ write 60mpbs which is suit for Windows. I am seeing new SDHC card which is a Sandisk Extreme III 30mpbs read/30mbps write. It's improving over time so I hope soon I will see 50mbps read/ 50mpbs write which is good enough for Windows and excellent for Linux.

So therefore Lifespan is the weakness of SSD drive...

Am I crystal clear?

I don't think flash memory cards are the same as SSD drives, they are a huge difference. The reason why? Flash memory cards do not have chips and it's made differently and cheaply and they do not last as long. SSD drives have actual memory chips soldered to the board similar to RAM chips.

Yes but the read/wite lifecycle is the issue with SSD as well as SDHC. I don't mind having SSD drive in my laptop, netbook, or desktop. As long as you have backup...

Yes, and SSD is faster than SDHC in fact. The SSD r/w speed is far greater than SDHC for example it can read 160mbps / 90mbps write. That's heckava lot faster than HDD itself. But the cost was the issue. I'm sure that price will go down anyway.

That's the reason why it boots up Windows faster.

Depend on manufacturer, interface, and price.

Super Talent SSD with IDE is 32GB, 40MB/s 15MB/s = $87

OCZ SSD SATA is 64GB 100MB/s 80MB/s =$564

Intel SSD SATA is 64GB 250MB/s 170MB/s. = $782

I think HDD still wins in terms of price per capacity and speed....you can get a 7200 rpm hdd with 32 MB cache (not sure) and get over 100-150 MB/sec and have a longer lifespan as well.

http://www.barefeats.com/hard125.html Good example of how fast the 2 TB hdds are.

I think the smaller GB hdds are generally faster on accessing the data because there's less to access.

160GB SATA HDD only, cannot upgrade extra 2GB memory, and Intel® AtomTM Z530 (1.60GHz/533MHz FSB/512K L2Cache) processor

6-cell battery pack is extended. 4-5 hours in using video callings!!

Return the Purple P3 netbook and buy different netbook that can upgrade more memory and have better options than Purple Netbook. I am planning on buying Asus 1201n Dual core atom netbook once it come out. It will have 3GB memory

Otherwise, if the cost concerns you, better stick with P3 Netbook and put up with it.

Yep, SSD limited lifetime.. That's why I use Toshiba 40GB 16MB Cache 5400 RPM HDD for my lappy, it's longer lifespin than Hitachi, WD and other HDD makers.

bought in 2001 till 2004 Hitachi HDD died and bought Toshiba HDD.

Sound nice about new Asus 1201n Dual core atom netbook. I had read info on it.
Asus Eee PC 1201HA and 1201N specs revealed

I like it but I think that it will cost over $500.

I have two netbooks. P3 Dell Mini 10 netbook and Asus 11" netbook. Asus netbook is better than Dell netbook.

that's the tricky part. some places have rules that there is no motorized vehicle allowed on "sidewalk" including Segway. NYC does not allow this.
