AT&T Introduces New iPhone Text Accessibility Plan for Customers with Disabilities

New Rate Plan Includes Unlimited Internet and Messaging

San Antonio, Texas, April 29, 2008

The iPhone is now even more accessible for Americans who are deaf or have a hearing or speech disability. Today, AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) announced a new Text Accessibility Plan (TAP) for iPhone, designed to give iPhone customers with disabilities the choice of unlimited text messaging, Web browsing and easy access to e-mail for $40 a month.

"Our Text Accessibility Plan allows customers who are deaf or have hearing or speech disabilities to literally tap out their communications on the go," said Carlton Hill, vice president of Product Management, Voice Products and Affiliate Marketing for AT&T's wireless unit. "Now with TAP for iPhone, users can tap, flick and pinch the innovative Multi-Touch touch screen for a completely new world of functionality."

This new plan is available to new and current iPhone users with qualifying disabilities through AT&T's National Center for Customers with Disabilities (NCCD). To qualify for the iPhone TAP, customers must complete an application for eligibility. The form is available for download at Text Accessibility Plan for iPhone | Wireless from AT&T, formerly Cingular.

During the iPhone activation process, customers sign up for a standard iPhone voice and data plan. After the iPhone is activated, customers can e-mail, fax or mail the eligibility form back to the NCCD to change their rate plan to the TAP for iPhone.

Current iPhone customers who qualify may also submit the NCCD application to request the TAP for iPhone. Customers can contact the AT&T NCCD with questions at 866-241-6568 for voice calls or 866-241-6567 for TTY calls.

AT&T offers TAP plans to qualifying customers for use with most handsets across AT&T's portfolio. The NCCD also helps AT&T customers with disabilities with a variety of applications that aid in wireless communications. These include Mobile Magnifier, which enables individuals who have low vision or are blind to zoom in on the screen and Mobile Speak, which reads aloud menu options.

For the complete array of AT&T offerings, visit Wireless, DSL Internet, satellite TV Services and Phone | AT&T. For more information about AT&T's NCCD or other offerings for customers with disabilities, visit AT&T's commitment to customers with disabilities | AT&T wireless services.

Good to hear that!

I still wish they would come out TAP for BB's cuz lot of my friend love BB and they don't want to be on Sprint they want to be on AT&T but have to stay with Sprint cuz of the deaf plan rate.

I still using my HTC 8525 cuz I like to tether to my laptop and iphone can't do that yet also iphone have no 3G support yet and my 8525 have it. Soon with SDK out that iphone should have software become avaiable to tether to laptops maybe and in fall should be a 3G iphone support too.

If iphone come out with small wireless keyboard then maybe I would think about iphone but now I stick with my old 8525 still reliable and WM 6.1 too.

Good to hear AT&T thinks about deaf commuties but they need to push BB company to allow TAP plan on BB devices and more deaf will join and excite to go with AT&T.

Because powerful Mac OS X is stripped into smaller to run and function in iPhone and I feel that there might be work with small USB keyboard despite power drain. I guess so. There still development something is bigger than you thought possible!

Whooooaaaaaa....... Thank you for information.

Six weeks ago, I called ATT's NCCD. I explained them about my rheumatiod Arthritis. I can't use smartphone's qwerty keyboard like blackberry, sidekick, etc... Hurt my hands made me bad mood. Give up querty keyboard. Prefer to have iphone which is soft touch screen on keyboard give me stressless on my hands. I told them some deaf people with arthritis. I am very rare deaf male with rheumatiod arthritis. I know few deaf people have osteo arthritis.

NCCD suggested me to write letter to AT&T. I did write letter.

i am glad you sent a letter to att mobility. att mobility is working very hard to get the TAPs for deaf people. it is pain in the butt with apple because it authorizes the iphone plans before att mobility offers the plans.

i now understand why u like iphone better for your health situation. i do not know about what next iphone will be like in the future. the rumors say 3g iphone will be thicker with sliding qwerty keyboard. even through i work for att mobility and they wont tell us the details of any mobiles. that sucks... we will know more about 3g iphone sooner...

3G iphone -- 60 days to go....

Customers wanting to utilize the iPhone TAP plan will need to follow the regular iPhone activation procedures. Once iPhone is activated via iTunes then the customer may contact our National Center for Customers with Disabilities to change his or her plan to the TAP plan for iPhone.

ok have you tried to adjust the sizes on tilt ?

go START>SETTINGs>SYSTEM>SCREEN>TEXT SIZE. you can find there to adjust the size. that is it.

oh one more to add...

if u want bigger screen on internet. you can expand the size of internet on tilt or any WM mobile.

when u are on IE, click on MENU>VIEW>TEXT SIZE. that is where you can adjust the size of internet. good luck !

Well I don't like AT&T's policy or whatever it is. Because if you want TAP service for iPhone, then you are required to fill out the form and signature from your certified doctor to verify that YOU are actually Deaf, Hard of Hearing or Speech Impaired. It will NOT automatically change the plan. You will have to mail or fax it to NCCD for them to change the whatever plan to TAP service plan. Sound stupid?

AT&T

That's life and it's their proof that you are deaf and not cheating on the plan. Anyone can lie and just get a cheap plan. I sent them my audiologist note stating that I'm deaf and got the plan last year. It won't be a problem since I already have TAP plan, I just simply upgrade to iphone with 3g or something and let them know.
