Last night I watched a movie with our new ROKU 3 and NETFLIX streaming - and for the first time ever - under the Audio and Language box there was a Closed Capture choice. I chose that and I had a yellow-box closed caption during the movie. I have been watching lots of foreign films because I had to rely on the subtitles - but that did not help me with British films or Hollywood films.

I'm sure that this will only work with recent films .... but at least all the hardware/software is up and running. I never had this result with our older ROKU 2 ---- I did a hardware update after installing the new ROKU 3 ....

Hrmm I think they started adding CC in Roku2 HD or higher but Netflix had CC for while now.

Almost all movies on Netflix is CC ready now which is a big improvement over last year and also I have email back and forth with Netflix that they said they will work on changing the CC and subtitle to allow us to choose the fonts and color and add background border if we choose to on Roku.

That's good news! I hated the yellow font that they have. It makes it hard to read on white backgrounds. The yellow font isn't outlined with black which would have helped on any backgrounds.

Netflix announced about the update overhaul today and even mentioned Roku 3 in the article as one of the device getting the update overhaul.

it also mentioned that Roku 2 will get the update overhaul but it won't happen for some time.

I am not sure if that mean they are changing how the subtitle looks etc but I hope so.

Which email you use? I tried few of them and no answer back after I found some tv show and movie have issue with subtitles as delay by 3 secs, pop up around 8 words for 1 sec then went off.

I wonder if these geniuses who make 'yellow on sometimes white background' captions
ever watch their own work at one point in their miserable life..

Chat with them, it quicker

If they cannot answer your questions during chat then they will probably ask for your email and higher up will get back with you.

I have Roku 2.

They said that the overhaul will be added for the Roku 2 box early next year. Looking forward to it!

Tonight I saw the update on Roku3 so I got excited ...

Eagerly I started Netflix and .... same stupid yellow fonts with no border background.

I got on chat and started talking to Netflix and asked them if all the communicate between us for the past several months was a joke or worthless.

Netflix said they are very sorry and they will take this matter seriously and correct it asap.

So we shall see but I doubt it going to happen anytime soon now or never.

petition to netflix

Hi,
We too have been asking Netflix to change the yellow letters captioning for several years. One of the techs I talked to told me that what was needed was more demand for the change. So, I started a petition on Change.org, which could really use some signers. If any of you agree, please sign the petition and pass it on to friends, or through social media. I hope it possible to sign through this link. Thank you very much for your consideration and help.

Hello!
I've started the petition "netflix.com: change the yellow subtitles, provided by Netflix when it streams, to white on black subtitles, which can be read better" and need your help to get it off the ground.
Will you take 30 seconds to sign it right now? Here's the link:
http://www.change.org/petitions/netflix-com-change-the-yellow-subtitles-provided-by-netflix-when-it-streams-to-white-on-black-subtitles-which-can-be-read-better
Here's why it's important:
People who are hearing impaired, depend on subtitles, or closed captioning, when they are watching tv shows or movies. Netflix provides subtitiles for those shows it streams, which are not closed captioned. These subtitles are yellow and, unfortunately, blend into light backgrounds and are impossible to read. Much of the dialogue is lost and it is hard to follow the story. Usually, closed captions are white letters in a black box, which stands out whatever the background is.
Netflix is a company which responds to the concerns of its users. I have spoken to representatives several times and they say that the subtitles could be changed, if there were a demand for it. Since they already provide subtitles, I am asking that they take the extra step to provide white on black subtitles which make it much easier for people to read. I would greatly appreciate your help.
You can sign my petition by clicking here.
Thanks!

Apple TV is better than Roku. Apple TV 's subtitle is any style, size, color, and background if you choose. See image of Netflix s movie.

good to know

It's good to know that Apple TV lets you select the subtitle style. So, you're saying that once you set your options, it then covers all captions, including the ones that are provided by Netflix, as well as the ones provided by the individual tv show or movie. My experience with Netflix is that you can set options, but they don't extend to the (yellow) captions provided by Netflix itself. I'll check it out. Thanks for the information.

The caption settings only work on the PC. I can get rid of the yellow caption if I watch Netflix on PC but not on my TV which uses Roku2.

Can you take a snapshot of Apple TV's customizable subtitle menu?

Edited: Forget it. Thanks anyway.
