Interesting, but I still have a hard time believing that a 2D animated face on the computer screen can convey as much information as a person's real face.

You'd still have to get past the fact that studies have shown that lip reading is only used effectively by 30-50% of the people studied. In my opinion, lip reading does not convey enough information, even with additional sound cues, compared to actual text of the words spoken.
