Floyd County's Louise Osborne named Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing Community Leader of the Y

RN-T.com - Floyd County s Louise Osborne named Deaf or Hard of Hearing Community Leader of the Year

Floyd County resident Louise Osborne has been named Georgia’s Deaf or Hard-of-Hearing Community Leader of the Year by Georgia Relay.

Georgia Relay is the free public service that enables people who are deaf, hard-of-hearing, deaf-blind and speech-impaired to place and receive calls via a standard telephone line.

The honor is awarded annually to an individual who has made significant contributions and is actively involved in the state’s deaf and hard-of-hearing community.

Oborne was nominated by her peers in the Georgia School for the Deaf’s Alumni Association and was presented with her award following the school’s homecoming football game on October 17.

She has worked for the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf and the Georgia School for the Deaf as a paraprofessional educator, teacher and home life director. She retired after 28 years of service with the Georgia Department of Education.

She directed the deaf productions “The Curious Savage” and “The World’s Greatest Deaf Talent Show.” She is a dedicated advocate of deaf children’s educational rights and needs and is president of the Floyd County Adoptive and Foster Parent Association. She also offers support to local deaf senior citizens, providing transportation and cooking.

“I hope to continue to do what I can for the deaf/hard of hearing community as long as I am able and with God's help,” she said of the recognition.

Georgia Relay Outreach Coordinator, Karin Sack, said “We are lucky to have someone like Louise who is so dedicated to helping the deaf community.”
