Cuba Attended Deaf-Blind International Assembly

Cuba Attended Deaf-Blind International Assembly

Reinaldo Romeu, national coordinator of the Deaf-blind Association in Cuba, told ACN that a resolution on human rights for these handicapped people that was adopted by the United Nations was analyzed, signed by 73 countries and ratified by over 50 of them, including Cuba.

He added that they also discussed the education of these people, and explained that Cuba has special schools and teaching classrooms for 164 children with the double handicap, besides a program of cochlear implants that 165 people have benefited from.

The Cuban official also said that at the events they addressed topics with regard to communication, the equality of the handicapped woman, jobs opportunities, the spreading of their work by the mass media and the adoption by the governments of integration plans.

During the meeting the Federation officials were elected, they created the African association of the deaf/blind and agreed to have the next general assembly in Tokyo, Japan.

Helen Keller World Conference is an international event held after every five years. It was last held in Finland in 2005. After the one in Uganda this year, the subsequent one will be in Japan in 2014.

The conference is used as a platform for discussing issues concerning deaf-blindness as a critical agenda in development and human rights.

Helen Keller (June 27, 1880–June 1, 1968) was a US author, activist, lecturer and a poet. She was the first deaf-blind person to graduate from college.
