New DVD helps deaf and deafblind learn how to navigate Ottawa Public Library
Article
A customized DVD version of the Ottawa Public Library’s (OPL) Getting to Know the Library was launched last week at the Greenboro District Library. Produced in partnership with the Ottawa Community Coalition for Literacy and the Ottawa Deaf Centre, the video version is presented in American Sign Language (ASL) and uses the content of the OPL manual to help deaf and deafblind users get comfortable with the library. The 35-minute DVD captures a range of activities that help introduce deaf and deafblind learners to the library. The DVD is also a valuable asset to instructors and trainers. It features optional captions for viewers who may not be fluent in American Sign Language (ASL). Some deafblind people have a small amount of vision and are able to view the DVD. “This DVD is an excellent compliment to the Getting to Know the Library manual,” says City librarian Barbara Clubb. “OPL staff and our partners are reaching out to users who may be more comfortable with video rather than print. Anything we can do to eliminate barriers to the library is important and this DVD is an excellent tool for trainers and users alike.” Ottawa Deaf Centre staff and learners, along with OPL staff, serve as the key actors in the DVD. It features a series of segments such as: An OPL staff member conducting a tour of a library branch accompanied by an Ottawa Deaf Centre staffer who simultaneously translates into ASL; A visit to every section of the library and an explanation of what happens there; Actors attending a story time; as well as learning how to select books that appeal to their children’s interests; Deaf clients learning how to get a library card and how to use the online catalogue; and, A segment with a Deafblind learner from the CNIB Literacy Program for Deafblind Adults. The director found creative ways to use the extra footage that was shot. From that footage, a series of additional resources were created that viewers can use to learn about such topics as loans, fines and express checkout. The DVD will be available through the Ottawa Community Coalition for Literacy website Ottawa Community Coalition for Literacy - Welcome!. It will be used as class content or by individual learners. The Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities provided the ASL DVD funding. For more information, visit Ottawa Public Library | Bibliothque publique d'Ottawa. |
