Deaf and mute build own classroom
Deaf and mute build own classroom - Fiji Times Online
THEY may be mute and deaf but their disabilities have not stopped them from building their own classroom. The students of the Labasa Handicapped School, which has a role of 106, have put to practice their knowledge of carpentry and joinery on their new classroom. On Friday, they kept themselves busy yesterday in mixing cement powder and lining cement blocks to lay a strong foundation for their classroom next year. Supervised by teachers and not hindered by their disabilities, the students used sign language to communicate and direct each other on the steps of mixing cement powder or laying blocks. School headteacher Mukesh Chand said the new classroom was funded by the Australian Government for the new catering school curriculum. "The students are building their own classroom without the help of any carpenters and this is like practical work for them. "We need to train them before they join the employment sector so this is basically training ground for them," Mr Chand said. He said the teachers have helped guide the students through the construction work. "The students catch on very fast and although they use sign language most of the time in directing one another with building work, there have been no problems at all." "This new classroom will be used for students interested in catering which will start January next year," Mr Chand said. |
