Marry us, girls tell deaf dance star

Marry us, girls tell deaf dance star - Times LIVE

Since making an appearance on the TV reality show SA's Got Talent, deaf hip-hop dancer Darren Rajbal has been overwhelmed by fans, including some proposing marriage.

His mother, Shereen, said: "Most of his fans are girls. They tell him how handsome he is and that they want to meet him, but all he is interested in is his dancing. I help him to write messages to them anyway, to let them know that he is thankful for their support."

Rajbal, 19, astounded the show's judges and audience with his performance two weeks ago.

The teenager, who also has a partial learning disability, began dancing only four years ago when, during a power outage, he kept his family entertained until the electricity was restored.

Using his mother Shereen as an interpreter, Rajbal told the Sunday Times Extra that the audition had not been nerve-racking for him. "It was great, easy," he said.

He added that when he was told what the judges had said of his performance, he was "overjoyed".

A Grade 11 pupil at Fulton School for the Deaf, Rajbal said he was inspired by the everyday movements of people in his choreography.

"I watch the normal movements of people, and when I see something interesting, I pick that move and imagine how to put it together as a dance."

Making a fist and rubbing the left side of his chest, the hip-hop fan said it was difficult to explain how he managed to dance without hearing music, adding he "just feels it in him".

He was a victim of an attempted hijacking three months ago, but said it had not dampened his spirit.

"He came through all that so well and is still pursuing his dreams," said his mother.

His has an array of female fans, although there are a few guys that appreciate his talent

One fan said: "Whoop Whoop! Finally someone who is doing us Indians Proud! Go, Darren, go!"

Another fan, called Darkangel, wrote on the SA's Got Talent blog: "Firstly I would like to take this time to say he has taken my breath away and, for me, he is on top.

"Still have to see who his competition is, but, for me, he's the best by far. I love you, Darren, and make us, SA, proud to have talent like you."
