GSD celebrates new gymnasium with Kathy Cox, Whitworth family

RN-T.com - GSD celebrates opening of new gym today

Braving chilly temperatures and overcast skies, dignitaries, students, staff and friends of the Georgia School for the Deaf gathered Saturday to celebrate the opening of the school’s new gymnasium.

State School Superintendent Kathy Cox was among those in attendance to celebrate the opening.

She said the “state of the art, brand spanking new facility” the students will be able to use was an exciting accomplishment for the school, considering this was the newest building to be constructed on campus since at least the 1980s.

“I think everyone is going to be real excited to go inside, especially since it is warm inside,” she said.

Cox also talked about how the Whitworth family, starting with Jim and Shirley Whitworth, dedicated their lives to making the school one of the best in the state, especially former teacher and superintendent Jim Whitworth, who began his career at the school in 1958.

The Whitworth Gym bears the family’s name.

“He has been a friend and counsel to thousands of students at GSD in the years he taught and led the school,” she said.

GSD director Lee Shiver said the family was reluctant to allow their name to be used for the gym, but with some persuasion they were able to get the Whitworths on board.

“I’ve been telling everyone that it’s for my parents,” said GSD head football coach Erik Whitworth. “It’s a great honor for my folks and my family.”

Shiver said the students got a sneak peek at the new gym on Thursday for GSD’s homecoming rally.

“We had a pep rally Thursday, and we got everyone into the cafeteria, and I walked in and stopped the cheerleaders and asked, ‘What are you doing in here?’” Shiver said. “Once they realized what was going on, they all ran into the gym.”

It cost $1.9 million to build the new facility.

“It should look like this 50 years from now,” he said.
