Accusing the government of ignoring their plight, a number hearing impaired people today demanded immediate implementation of projects meant for them, and said they will hold a 'Deaf Awareness March' on September 27, the International Day of the Deaf.
The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) alleged that the government has failed to establish a 'Sign Language Research and Training Centre' for the deaf as promised in the 11th Five Year Plan.
"Despite being approved by the Planning Commission, the Cabinet, the Prime Minister and the National Development Council, we have not received any facilities and services mentioned in the Plan," said A S Narayanan, general secretary of NAD, who himself is deaf and has to take help of an interpreter.
