The Times - Deaf boy in hit-and-run

A NINE-year-old deaf boy is in a serious condition in a Durban hospital after he was knocked over by a hit-and-run driver on his way to school this morning.

The unnamed schoolboy from Amanzimtoti was crossing Adams Road outside the Durban School for the Hearing Impaired when he was knocked down in front of other pupils.

The driver of the car sped off but later handed himself over to police.

ER24 spokesman Chris Botha said the boy sustained serious head injuries and severe fractures of his left leg.

“The paramedics on scene were told that the boy did not know that the car was behind him because he did not see or hear it approaching,” he said.

The boy was taken to Prince Mshiyeni Hospital.

The school’s management declined to comment until the principal had visited the boy in hospital and a staff member told The Times that the principal will comment tomorrow.

Police spokesman Superintendent Buhle Ngidi said a man, believed to be the driver, handed himself over to police shortly after midday.

“He came to the police station and identified himself as the driver. He said he drove away because he was too traumatised,” Ngidi said.

Ouch... poor boy and driver. :(

At the least, he is at the hospital for his safety sake. =/
