RN-T.com - Georgia School for the Deaf parents to protest backruptcy trustee s claim to promised money won by Superintendent Kathy Cox
A group of parents and Georgia School for the Deaf alumni are planning to picket the office of a bankruptcy lawyer who is working to get control of the $1 million in winnings the state’s top educator won on a game show and planned to give to schools for deaf and blind students.
Organizer Kimberly McGuiness, an involved parent at the Georgia School for the Deaf in Cave Spring, said it’s time for people to see that this money was meant for the children and outright greed is keeping it from them.
“These sharks have enough to eat without taking this charitably donated money for our children,” McGuiness said.
Georgia Superintendent of Schools Kathy Cox had announced she was giving the money she received from her August appearance on Fox’s “Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?” to three public schools for the deaf and blind — the Georgia Academy for the Blind, the Georgia School for the Deaf and the Atlanta Area School for the Deaf
But the superintendent and her husband filed for bankruptcy Nov. 17, claiming $3.5 million in debt, and the bankruptcy trustee, Gary Brown, is demanding the prize money — saying it’s part of her income.
McGuiness said so far all the other creditors have filed petitions to withdraw their claims to the prize. Parents from all of the three state schools and alumni are planning to make the trip to Brown’s office in Newnan on Wednesday in order to plead with Brown, McGuiness said.
“All we want is for Mr. Brown to follow suit and withdraw any claim to the prize funds by saying ‘give the money to the state schools,’” McGuiness said.
Phone calls to Gary Brown were not returned.
The group obtained a permit to organize a protest outside the office on Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. said Newnan Chief of Police Douglas L. “Buster” Meadows.
