A Micanopy man was arrested Tuesday on three felony counts in connection with an incident involving violence against a deaf female relative.
Joseph Davis, 55, of Micanopy, was charged with aggravated abuse of a disabled adult, domestic battery by strangulation and aggravated battery using a deadly weapon.
According to the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, the woman told deputies what happened through an American Sign Language translator. The woman said Davis was inside his home when he threatened her with what looked like a broom handle, then hit her on the head, back and shoulders. When she took shelter in another room, Davis kicked in a door to get to her, then punched her and choked her before she could get out of the house and summon help.
There was no information available Wednesday to explain what started the incident.
The woman was treated at an area hospital. Davis was being held at the Alachua County jail on Wednesday.
