Deaf swimmers' lake crossing delayed for warmer water

GuelphMercury.com - News - Deaf swimmers' lake crossing delayed for warmer water

Brenda Lussier's plan to swim across Lake Ontario has been delayed.

A decision was made late Wednesday night to push the start of the crossing to July 22 instead of this Sunday due to lower than normal temperatures in Lake Ontario.

Lussier is attempting to be the first deaf person to complete the 52-kilometre crossing of the lake.

She said after a long meeting with members of her support crew, it was decided to put the start back.

"I'm glad it's being postponed because I didn't want to abort the swim while I'm swimming and this will give me more time training in smaller lakes for the next two weeks,'' Lussier wrote in an email.

Solo Swims of Ontario, the non-profit organization that governs swims of the Great Lakes, advised Lussier that the water was too cold right now, greatly reducing her chances at success.

Most attempts to swim across Lake Ontario are done in mid-August. According to records kept by Solo Swims of Ontario, nobody has ever successfully completed a crossing as early as Lussier had originally planned.

Lussier will enter the water at around noon on July 22 in Niagara-on-the-Lake and hopefully exit the water roughly 22 hours later at Marilyn Bell Park on the CNE grounds in Toronto.

Lussier is hoping to use the swim to raise $40,000 for an accessible splash park at the Bob Rumball Camp For The Deaf near Parry Sound.

More information on Lussier's swim, and donating to the fundraiser can be found at: bobrumball.org
