Hundreds from Jacksonville area rally at Capitol | illinois, jacksonville, school - News - Jacksonville Illinois News and Information Jacksonville Journal Courier

Two and a half bus loads of Illinois School for the Deaf and Illinois School for the Visually Impaired employees, students and supporters rallied Tuesday at the Capitol in Springfield.

The protesters from Jacksonville added to the enthusiastic throng of about 5,000 others from various Department of Human Services and other state entities that have been threatened with severe cuts under Governor Pat Quinn’s proposed “doomsday” budget.

Gov. Quinn’s office announced last week that the Illinois School for the Deaf and the Illinois School for the Visually Impaired, along with many other state services and facilities, will be closed if lawmakers cannot get past a $9.2 billion budget impasse.

In response to the news, ralliers overwhelmed the Capitol Tuesday.

Guards stopped letting people inside the domed building about noon, as it was apparently at capacity.

Outside protesters stuck around, holding up signs and setting up camp on the Capitol lawn.

Inside representatives from the various affected entities took turns speaking, riling each other up with chants and narratives from those who have been benefited by the threatened services and programs.

A representative from the Illinois Association for the Deaf and Illinois School for the Deaf alumna Krista Brown were among speakers.

“I think the important thing is to show solidarity and to show that people are here,” said State School for the Deaf Superintendent Mary Beth Lauderdale as she stood outside the Capitol.

“There’s a big group here,” she said, referring to everyone potentially affected by budget cuts. “And then there’s smaller groups in that big group; and ISVI and ISD are two of those little groups,” she said.
