Grand Forks Herald | Man pleads not guilty in Hartze stabbing

A man charged with stabbing a Devils Lake teacher to death pleaded not guilty to murder Tuesday.

Billy Thomas Eagleman, 27, waived his right to a preliminary hearing, and a trial was set to begin Jan. 6. Ramsey County District Judge Lee Chistofferson is slated to hear the case.

Eagleman is accused of killing Paula Hartze, who taught English at the North Dakota School for the Deaf for 13 years. Hartze was found stabbed to death in her home in March.

Authorities have said Eagleman and Hartze were acquaintances.

The murder charge Eagleman faces is a Class AA felony, which carries a maximum penalty of life in prison without the possibility of parole.

Eagleman is being held in jail, and his bond is set at $500,000.
