Flint dad's Three Peaks Challenge for deaf charity

THE father of a deaf child is to hit the heights to raise money for a charity that has helped his daughter make friends with other children who have hearing problems.
Michael Davies, from Flint, whose nine-year-old daughter Emma is profoundly deaf, will tackle the Three Peaks Challenge of Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon for the National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS).

He will be joined on his mission to raise £1,000 by four colleagues from the Airbus UK plant in Broughton, Gavin Marr from Connah's Quay, Dave Humphries from Llay, Greg Brownbill from Pentre Halkyn and Adam Croft from Buckley.

Their expedition will begin on Friday, July 25, when they will leave Flintshire at 9pm for the six-hour drive to Scotland.

Michael, 40, said the five friends were not underestimating the physical challenge ahead.

He said: "I have only ever been up Snowdon so I am looking forward to conquering the three peaks in 24 hours.

"While climbing Snowdon recently we met some people who were doing the Three Peaks Challenge that day and they said it was really hard but that they were glad they had done it, although they were stumbling at the end.

"We are confident – we know we'll do it."

Michael hopes the money that he and his friends raise will help NDCS continue its support of children who are deaf, and their families.

He said: "NDCS organises family events that Emma goes to on a regular basis and they rely on charity donations to organise these events.

"Although Emma doesn't get excluded from other activities it is nice for her to meet children in the same situation as she is, so she doesn't feel like she's by herself.

"She has had a cochlear implant to help her hear, so it is good for her to meet other children who have been through the same operation."

Michael, who also has a 14-year-old daughter Rachel, added that NDCS provides opportunities for families of deaf children to meet and discuss the problems they have faced.

Helen Lerwill, from NDCS, said: "Every day in the UK three babies are born deaf and 90 per cent are born to hearing parents with little experience of deafness.

"The NDCS is the national charity dedicated to creating a world without barriers for deaf children and young people, and is funded almost entirely through public donations.

"None of our work would be possible without the commitment of people like Michael."
