Transition Workshop Scheduled for Deaf Teens and Their Parents

Ohio.com - Transition Workshop Scheduled for Deaf Teens and Their Parents

Deaf Initiatives will host its 6th biennial workshop "Making a Difference with Your Future" on September 12, 13 and 14, 2008 at the Columbus Marriott Airport. This transition workshop is for deaf and hard of hearing high school freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors and their parents/guardian from the state of Ohio.

There is not cost for the workshop, including hotel accommodations and meals for those students who qualify. The workshop will focus on the students' self-awareness, development and career awareness and how to begin preparing for the future. Transition from school to work or post secondary education will be addressed at the workshop, helping parents and students identify the best path to success.

The workshop offers various educational and work sessions, as well as opportunities for socialization for both the youth and their families. At the conclusion of the workshop, students are equipped with career “road maps” for the future and parents will be better prepared to assist their children in making academic and extra-curricular decisions.

Deaf Initiatives, a nonprofit organization located in Columbus, OH, will host the weekend-long workshop, along with The Ohio Rehabilitation Services Commission, The Ohio Department of Education, secondary and post secondary institutions including the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, parents groups and local advocacy organizations that serve the deaf and hard of hearing.

Research indicates that deaf and hard of hearing youth are in need of guidance and information regarding post-secondary education and career preparation. Unfortunately, most deaf youth do not receive the same level of vocational direction as their hearing peers. This directly affects their ability to pursue higher education and career options.

Space is limited to 45 families and the registration deadline is July 25. To register for the workshop, contact Anna Naumann at 614-238-3323 (voice/video phone), 800 985-3323 (voice) or TheDEAFund@aol.com.
