Find out what it's like to be deaf during special event

MiltonCanadianChampion.com: Article

Have you ever wondered what it's like to be deaf or hard of hearing?

The local branch of the Canadian Hearing Society wants to give Milton residents a glimpse of how it feels to live in a world of silence through its Deaf for a Day event Tuesday at Milton Mall.

The event will run from noon to 8 p.m. in support of Hearing Awareness Month.

A special activity will be set up in which people can experience for themselves some of the challenges deaf people face, explained Andrea Galarza of the Peel/Halton/Dufferin branch of the Canadian Hearing Society.

MUST TAKE ON TASK AT MALL

They'll be provided with assignments to accomplish out at the mall without speaking or hearing.

Participants will be equipped with ear buds and headphones to ensure silence.

An example of an assignment might be going to Zellers to research mattresses, Galarza said.

Participants will be accompanied by a staff member of the hearing society on the mission so there's no cheating, Galarza said, laughing.

A graffiti wall will give participants a chance to write about their experiences acting as a deaf person afterward.

It makes particular sense to do this event in Milton, since the town is home to a school for the deaf, Galarza said.

"It's good for the general public to know what it's like," she said.

The event has gone over very well in the past, she said, with many people's eyes opened to the difficulties deaf people face.
