Sign Language Interpretation - CETRA Bridges Communication with the Deaf and Hearing Impaired

In response to increased demand from clients, CETRA is pleased to announce the addition of Sign Language Interpretation to its worldwide translation and interpretation services. Accordingly, CETRA has joined the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). RID, the leading organization in the U.S. representing sign language interpreters, has established a national standard of quality and promotes the continued growth and development of the profession of interpretation and transliteration of American Sign Language and English.

Tony Guerra, Head of Interpretation Services at CETRA, states: "Sign language interpreters have become an invaluable tool in providing communication with the deaf and hard-of-hearing community. Interpreting is a human service-related field that is utilized in countless different industries and life situations, such as medical, mental health, law, education, civic events, religious services, theaters, etc. Interpreters, who must adhere to a strict code of conduct and ethics, are bilingual and bicultural professionals. They not only help to bridge communication gaps, but are also sensitive to and provide a deep understanding of deaf culture."

The most common type of interpretation is usually done in American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gesture form with its own linguistic features. Other types include Sign Language Transliteration, which uses elements of ASL, mouth movements and English, Oral Transliteration, a silent version of spoken English, and Cued Speech Transliteration, which uses movements of English speech along with hand shapes and placements. CETRA's interpreters are certified in one or several of their specialties and are accomplished professionals with a high level of linguistic, cognitive and technical skills.
