Barking and Dagenham Recorder - Family's grief at murder of deaf Les, 60

THE SISTER of a man murdered by a suspected hammer blow to the head has spoken of her grief at his "senseless" murder.

Partially deaf Leslie Bones, 60, was attacked by two men in the Coral bookmakers, Station Parade, Barking, on Saturday afternoon. The attackers were in a group of five men.

He died in the early hours of Sunday. Shopkeepers nearby believe a hammer may have been used in the attack.

Mr Bones' sister Sandra Walder, 52, of Dawson Avenue, Barking, told the Recorder his murder has left her numb with grief.

She said: "It just hasn't sunk in. How can you do this to a 60-year-old deaf man? I can't get my head round it. I want to know who's done this."

Mr Bones grew up in Barking and lived with his wife, Sylvia, in Merton Road, Seven Kings.

Heartbroken Miss Walder added: "His wife is devastated. He was her life. They had no children, it was just the two of them. They lived for each other. He didn't have a bad bone in his body.

"His niece is 13, she's devastated. How do I tell her what's happened to her uncle? I have to tell her he was killed. It's awful.

"If I needed him, he was always there. He was just a great person."

Shopkeepers who work close to the bookmakers say attacks are common in the area.

One said: "There's always trouble. It's full of young kids making mischief."

A close family friend of 30 years, said: "He was nice. Everyone liked Les."

Two men, aged 20 and 22, have been questioned in connection with Mr Bones' death and were released on bail to return on May 6.

An inquest is due to open today (Thursday) at Walthamstow Coroner's Court.
