Support for families of deaf children

Support For Families Of Deaf Children (from Asian Image)

The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) is launching an three year project to improve achievement for deaf children from black and minority ethnic communities.

With funding from the Department for Children, Schools and Families, the project will operate in London, the West Midlands, Yorkshire and Humberside.

NDCS is recruiting one part-time project officer to co-ordinate the project from London or Birmingham.

Among other things, the role will include the recruitment and training of parenting course facilitators and community language interpreters.

The project officer will also co-ordinate the delivery of parenting courses for BME families of deaf children in the three project areas, as well as the production and dissemination of a brand new DVD resource for BME Families.

Zobia Kalim, NDCS BME Development Officer, said, "NDCS is transforming its advocacy and support services for families of deaf children.

"This new project will allow us to reach more families from BME communities to ensure they are receiving comprehensive information in order to make informed choices about important issues such as health and education.

Deafness makes it harder for children to communicate especially if English is not their first language.

"Also language differences often restrict parents from accessing vital information. We want to empower families of deaf children from black and minority ethnic communities."

Candidates should be able to speak one or more community languages. Closing date for applications is 30 April 2008.
