I give NBC an applause for having more deaf actors on tv, bec its a major step for TV.
I agree with most of you the signing parts would cut-off during a signed conversation and ethical practices for the interpreter were out of line. I have to remember this is Hollywood doing this, they sort of twist things around for a better production in my opinion. That's Hollywood for you

Even uncertified interpreters are supposed to follow the code of ethics.
It wasn't clearly explained in the program but I was under the impression that the interpreter was a police officer (notice the badge he wore) who served as staff interpreter for the department. |

It used to be the RID Code of Ethics; now it's called the Code of Professional Conduct for RID and NAD interpreters.

Missed about 30 minutes of the show. Started watching where they had arrested Larry and he refused to let the cop interpreter sign. Missed the murder scene and all.
Thought it was strange a cop would be interpreting. Wouldn't a big place like NYC have access to certified non-partial terps that have nothing to do with being a cop? Another problem I saw was the way they had the sign language going. Most of the time it was blocked or shot poorly that the hands were not visible. Also thought the storyline was old; the usual cochlear implant debate and having a hearing sibling "abandon" the deaf sibling. I don't think I missed the first 30 minutes after all.

I taped that show last night and watched it this morning... I was impressed by the fact that Law and Order did have deaf actors there.. but some things did bother me... I wondered why for one example, the 3 cops at the ice skating party would be somehow trying to find out what the deaf couple on the ice were "arguing" abuot and the other cop that was doing the interpretting had to turn aaway but still get some of the conservatoin and relay to the main cop.. eh.. also one of the deaf suspects was complaining abuot wanting a deaf cop and the cop that was interpretting later said his parents were deaf.. I say eh might explain why.. I admit I am not good at the signing level of ASL as I am level 1 and my emotion showing is in need of improving somehow.. ehh but some signs I was trying to see what going on but ah..
It was good to see Deanna Bray on that show and also one interesting thing, while she was in a segment where she was chatting to someone on webcam on a monitor that showed the other person in full view... I wonder if Deanna is still working and is the show she worked in "FBEye" still going on or has ended production? |

Don't know; they didn't say. I'm not sure they even said he was a detective. I'll have to play back the tape and check on that.

StarrNancy said that the police didn't follow proper interpreter request protocol. I was wondering if a formal request was ever made.

I don't know what would have been a good storyline, but it just seemed the writers of the show didn't think of something more innovative than the usual debate about cochlear implants and how the deaf community is like a "cocoon." Another thing I wondered about was the lawyer for Larry deaf? Reba mentioned the lawyer was deaf, but when Larry was being interrogated I didn't see the lawyer using sign language, only saw him speaking.

Well, when he refused... they still had to try their best considering Larry wouldn't cooperate.

I don't remember the lawyer speaking. (I'm not saying he didn't; I just don't remember; I need to replay my tape). I did see him signing with Larry, and knowing Larry's attitude about hearing cops and juries, etc., a Deaf lawyer would fit his requirements. But it's possible the lawyer was a hearing signer, or a late-deafened oral signer, or . . . who knows?
