Deaf folks seek free office

SELANGOR Association of the Hearing Impaired (Sahi) hopes the state government will reconsider its appeal for free use of an office in Meru, Klang. Sahi president Zainul Ibrahim said, through an interpreter, that the association was finding it hard to pay the RM300 monthly rental. Eighteen months ago, the association made an appeal to Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Mohd Khir Toyo for a government-owned office unit in Meru. “In 2004, we appealed for the 1st floor unit owned by Selangor State Economic Development Corporation (PKNS) to be given to us for free. “PKNS declined and proposed that we rent it for RM450. “After much discussion, the rent was reduced to RM300 and we took it,” said Zainul in Shah Alam. “Basic amenities cost us RM150 and maintaining a phone line cost about RM50 monthly. “We are operating our office with limited funds that come from well-wishers and the Klang Welfare Department. “We hope Dr Khir will help us secure the office premises for free,” he added. For the time being, the organisation is appealing to PKNS to reduce the rental to a nominal fee. Sahi has 800 members, half of whom attended the festive celebration in Shah Alam recently. Zainul said the association planned to set up a computer centre for members to learn web designing. To contact the association, call 019-359 8797 (Hamidah Harun). Its office is at No 25A, Tingkat Satu, Jalan Pasar Baru, off Jalan Meru, Klang. |
