Japan has provided a grant to various non-profit organisations working for the underprivileged in India, Yoshiaki Kodaki, Consul General of Japan for South India, has said.

He said this at the signing ceremony held here yesterday to formalise the grant support to two NGOs - Dindigul-based Gandhigram Santhi High School for the Deaf which is a part of Gandhigram Trust and the Dharmapuri-based 'Tribal Health Initiative.'

The Consul General said the grant was vital for a developing nation such as India. 'I believe that the scheme is important for India so as to aid organisations working for the uplift of the downtrodden,' he said. Krishnaveni, a representative of the Gandhigram Santhi High School for the Deaf headed by Dr Kausalya Devi, said the grant would go a long way in improving the infrastructure of the school. 'The funds will be utilised for purchasing sophisticated equipment for detecting deafness in children during the early stage of the condition,' she said.

Reji George, managing trustee of Tribal Health Initiative, said the funds provided by Japan under the scheme would be used for improving the facilities of the tribals of Sittilingi in Dharmapuri district. 'By this move of the Japanese people, the health facilities of the tribals will improve and help integrate them with mainstream society', he said.
