KSD to host national counselors' convention

http://www.amnews.com/public_html/?m...21&format=html

The Kentucky School for the Deaf will host the annual convention of the National Counselors of the Deaf Association Thursday through Saturday. A conference is held each year in the home state of the president of the association which is Barb Snapp, a KSD school counselor.

The theme this year, "Unbridled Spirit: Changes and Challenges," will focus on the counseling and psychology needed to assist with the deaf. Participants can join the session of their choice and continuing education credits for leadership hours also will be available. In addition, there will be time allocated for an "Expert Expo" which gives an opportunity for those attending the conference to share materials and learn about agencies and organizations that serve Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students.

On Thursday from 7-9 p.m. there will be a simulation about the rape crisis center. On Friday, the morning is split into two sections from 8:30 a.m.-noon.

Participants can chose to either attend the counseling sessions, which will look at multi-cultural counseling and best practices for counseling, or the psychology sessions, which will focus on psychological testing and assessment issues. After lunch there will be a joint session that will focus on art therapy with deaf students followed by a sexual abuse victims session and psychotropic medications session from 3-4:30 p.m.

On Saturday there will be a joint session at 8:30 until 10 a.m. that will look at the legal issues followed by a traditional gift exchange. In previous years, each participant brought a gift to represent his/her home state to be exchanged on the last day of the conference.
