KIRKLEES Council is set to pilot a text messaging service for the deaf and hard of hearing.

The council aims to raise awareness to potential users and encourage them to use the pilot scheme.

The scheme will increase the council's use of the itex messaging service internally and externally, so it may better serve its customers.

The service is set to run from mid-February through to April.

The 290 registered deaf people in Kirklees, and the estimated 810 hard of hearing people in the district are being targeted.

Potential users of the service are encouraged to text the council on any matter relating to Kirklees services.

They will be able to do so by texting 80800, followed by the word `deaf' and their message.

Sapna Kareer, a council marketing officer, said: "The scheme will be piloted within the next few weeks.

"It will seek to analyse the responses of these groups to the new service.

"It will provide an alternative way for particular groups to contact the council on a range of generic issues.

"The service will be entirely free."
