England: GLOWING REPORT FOR DEAF COLLEGE

STUDENTS and staff at Doncaster's College for the Deaf have won praise - in a glowing report from education watchdog Ofsted.

The report into life at the Leger Way school praised the college for its achievements and understanding.

The study by the government inspection team said that achievements in vocational courses and skills were "very good" and added that staff were "caring and responsive" and understood what it was like to be deaf and how deaf students learn.

Particular subjects highlighted by the inspection team included business administration, construction, hospitality, sport and leisure and health, social care and childcare. Lessons promoting independent living skills, as well as the British Sign Language course, were also praised.

Teaching was described as "very good" and adaptable to the needs of individual students while the leadership and management of the different curriculum areas were two further strengths highlighted.

Though the report said that self-assessment of the students was used effectively for their continuous improvement, it did point out that managerial information could be better used to monitor the college's performance as a whole.

It added that other improvements could be made by having more technology to assist with students' long-term independence - and that better arrangements could be put in place for students requiring counselling.

The inspectors also asked the students what they liked about their college. Answers included excellent facilities, support from staff, educational trips and visits, and the chance to be independent and part of a community.

It added that they would like to see more after-college activities and more on-site facilities such as flashing door bells on the halls of residence and a students' union.

Alan Robinson, college principal, welcomed the report and said: "Our excellent education, training and support facilities mean that our students have the opportunity to gain qualifications to enable them to secure employment and to develop the confidence and self-esteem to face the everyday challenges of life.

"The overall findings of this inspection report are very encouraging to us in pursuit of our aims, and are a great boost for all those who work so hard within our organisation."
