Television fire safety adverts specifically aimed at the deaf community and hard of hearing received their first airing today.

The signed and subtitled ads were screened on Ulster Television focussing on the importance of having a fire escape plan and making sure that everyone in the home knows it.

It is the first time the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service have specifically targeted a publicity campaign at the hearing impaired.

Assistant Chief Fire Officer, Peter Craig said the adverts were the first in a series aimed at vulnerable and minority ethnic groups under the service`s overall outreach scheme.

"The Fire and Rescue Service has a committed community outreach programme, which has recently been enhanced with the launch of our multi-lingual fire safety campaign last October - including television, billboard and the distribution of fire safety leaflets in six different languages for minority ethnic groups within Northern Ireland," he explained.

"The Fire and Rescue Service`s number one priority is public safety and through these targeted outreach fire safety campaigns and by working with our partner agencies, we can prevent fires occurring in the first place and protect the most vulnerable groups within our community."
